So eager to get this out the door before the PS2 that they totally ignored security checks, leading to piracy and ironically the death of the console.

And the constant price drops were a desperate attempt. They made an excellent console and they fucked it up in so many ways. Truly a console ahead of its time.

Piracy didn't kill the DC. PS2 hype coupled with Sega's terrible support track record (Buy a Sega CD! Wait, we mean buy a 32X! Wait, we mean buy a Saturn!) killed the DC.

At the time when Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was the killer app for the DC, Sony fanboys (including, IIRC, at least one major game magazine) were claiming for a fact that MvC2 was not only going to be a PS2 launch title, but would have 12 new PS2-exclusive characters (MvC2 did eventually come to the PS2, but only years after the DC was dead--and, of course, with no added characters)

If the correlation between piracy and platform success really went in the direction implied by this urban myth, the N64 would've stomped all over the PlayStation, and the PS3 would be the most successful console this generation and the handhelds the least.
