The only thing that Touhou really has going for it, aside from difficulty, is the pretty pretty patterns. CAVE shooters are great, but they do tend to look like a flood of purple shit or huge golden X16s all over. Treasure's stuff looks awesome and usually has great gameplay, but sometimes they jump the shark like they did in Ikaruga, which had great production values, but was more of a memorization game than anything else.

Which, honestly, are the only remotely important thing in a bullet hell shooter.

(In the regular kind of shooter the most important thing is pretty levels and enemies.)

Psikyo and CAVE are my favorites. Japanese ZUN loves Taito obviously.

Touhou also benefits from being extremely peculiar. A lot of STGs, awesome or not, are brain crushingly generic in one way or another.

A couple other weird bullet hell doujin shooters are Meglilo and Hitogata Happa. Haven't actually played them yet but they're both available translated.

Yeah, that's true. I think that's why Samidare never got much attention outside of the lunatic fringe of the hardcore, as the art design was really generic.

I also forgot about Einhander and EtherVapor, although I dunno you could call the latter as good as any given Touhou, but it looks really really fucking cool.

I remember the english demo for this. Interesting teleportation mechanic, some really bizarre dialogue, and it lets you play dress-up with a robot witch girl. Not really polished or bullet hell, and I probably wouldn't buy it, but I still hope the full version gets upped somewhere eventually.
