I find UFO's plot really interesting. Probably the best story ZUN have ever written compared with all the other games. Still, even if the the story is not important for a STG that hardly last 1 hour (incluiding extra stage) it is great.

Yeah, and the ones ultimately behind the events in SA were Kanako and Suwako. Sometimes I think that ZUN is going somewhere with the overall plot, but then I remember that the big huge manga epic invasion of the moon was over a bottle of sake or some shit.

After SA, the geyser that appear near the Hakurei Shrine made the ship in which Byakuren was sealed to start floating again. All the followers of Byakuren started to search for the fragments of the Soaring Vault which would release Byakuren from her seal.

The rumors of the ship spread all ovr Gensokyo which took the attention of Reimu, Marisa and Sanae. They thought that the ship had a treasure inside so they went after it. You learn from Murasa that the ship is going to the 'paradise' in which all youkai can live happily ever after, but the heroine is a bitch and thinks that this is just another youkai's orgy of hell.

Nazrin tell you that the ship is actually going to Makai, or something that resembles it. After you beat Shou she tell you to follow her to break the seal from Byakuren. You free Byakuren and she tells you that she was a monk that lives a long time ago and helped youkais. She knows about magic, but got sealed away. The main characters is a Touhou main character once more and beats Byakuren because yes.

On the Extra Stage, the main character are told that the 'UFO' are just something that Nue wanted to look like. In other words, every person in Gensokyo could see the fragments as what their mind wanted. For the UFO crew they were only chinks of wood, but for Reimu and the rest were floating UFOs.

I liked that too. It's a bit better then in most games where the first half of the game is largely disconnected from everything else.

It was REALLY bad in MoF. All the characters until Stage 5 had nothing really to do with the plot.

Kappa and tengu live on youkai mountain, as well as being Kanako and Suwako's main worshippers in Gensokyo. Their representatives are pretty important.

The 'story' of Mountain of Faith was for Marisa or Reimu to work their way up to the top of the mountain to find who is responsible. So naturally while progressing up the mountain they'll run into these unrelated characters. UFO on the otherhand is all in one specific area so it's only natural that the characters are in someway related to each other.

UFO was more plot driven for the NPC cast than the heroines, the humans didn't really have a strong reason to go out and do something this time. A lot happened to the Youkai but for Reimu, Marisa and Sanae they pretty much ended up back where they started only with another set of meddlesome youkai running around now.

The kappa and tengu don't worship Moriya Shrine's gods, but the former are becoming allied with them, while the latter party remains neutral. Moriya is trying to get the humans to pray to them, while Reimu sits around getting drunk with Suika all day, except for when Yukari manipulates her into doing something.

Too bad nothing will come of it, since there's a good SRPG somewhere in there.

Alice knew where the source of the problem was and probably got out to investigate, Prismrivers were employed by Yuyuko, even Chen ends up being related to the one causing the mess and Letty has a valid motive to fight you. I don't see how PCB is the worst.

Or, even better, a setting where some other Touhou (who can be the extra boss) possesses one of them to break Gensokyo. The other Touhous find the heroines' sudden change of mind preposterous, and you fight random bosses from previous games and one or two new Touhous in final stages who are apparently the leaders of the resistance against you.

Pfft, I prefer the way each plot is actually rarely ever that serious. It's part of the charm of the series along with the art.

Taking Touhou seriously is where the problem is at. ZUN clearly doesn't take Touhou that seriously and it shows in his character designs, dialogue and stories.

Still, I was surprised at the way he linked Murasa with Byakuren, it was pretty well thought out and serious even for ZUN. A saviour and her disciples. Truly Youkai Jesus.
