I've been aware of it longer than I took part in it.
I would only say I became dedicated to it ~2015ish despite all the shit it had a hold on years prior. I kind of miss staying up all night shitposting on /jp/ when my alarm clock was going to go off only an hour after I decided to go to sleep.

well some people consider new people secondaries regardless even if they did play the games. and on some people this is valid since there is people who try to drive their political believes or other agenda's with it. Its really shame that entertainment media have become entry point for political or other ideological propagandas. I personally think that everyone too green regarding touhou is secondary in sense but if they keep their intrest to it and are not one of those faggots who try to insert their political or ideological bullshit in it, they are fine in my book.

Back when I was 11 years old I stumbled upon this video listing off the top 500 best memes and one of the videos featured a Ronald McDonald YTPMV of U.N Owen was Her. I looked into it because I really liked the music and found out it came from a game series called Touhou. I started listening to the music around that time and started playing the games when I was around 13 and I loved it. I was pretty bad at them though. I couldn't even get past Cirno on normal. The music from Touhou absolutely blew my mind when I was a kid and it honestly still does. One of the first animes that I ever watched was A Summer Day's Dream back when I was 12. It brings so much nostalgia coming back to it every now and then even though it wasn't a very interesting anime.

I think the actual trigger for getting into it was seeing all the R18 doujins I like which happened to feature Touhou, and getting an inkling for the characters/plot from that.

My earliest known memories of Touhou were a youtube friend I had who was a Ran fan and a youtube I watched who loved Reisen. I think this was around 2010 for me.
I also watched ‘McRoll’d’ and ‘Marisa Stole the Precious Thing’ and played A Super Mario Thing romhack with Cirno and Rumia in them; but I didn’t realize those were touhou related until later (didn’t know who raocow was at all either lol)
I only actually got into touhou once HSiFS was announced to come to steam.

Around 2010 I copied Osu along with bunch of music collection for the game from my friend. Found a catchy music by IOSYS that happen to be an arrangement for Hina theme then I found out about Touhou but not really into it yet. After that, there was my other friend that play a bunch of shmup then I saw him played Touhou 8. I then copied Touhou 6 through 12 from him then played it and I thought it was very impressive for a single man to create the game, character, and music alone. I really into touhou after I read the omake from touhou 8. His commentary on many things that gave him the idea for the game are truly inspiring. ZUN is truly a great creator and have made me into the doujin culture in general.
