I'm just starting out learning Japanese with the main goal being to be able to read manga. At this point I have zero desire to learn how to speak Japanese or understand what people are saying in Japanese.

I just want to be able to look at a manga page and understand what people are talking about.

I'm using an android app called Kanji Tree which has been very useful but I'm confused if hiragana and katakana are even necessary for what I want to accomplish? It seems like they are only used for pronunciation. For example one symbol might read as "ke" but "ke" has literally no meaning in English.

I've tried looking online and some people say with hiragana you can read basic children's books, but I'm under the impression at this point that they just mean you can read it out load. Afterall, even if I learned all hiragana I would only know a bunch of random sounds these symbols make. At least that's my current impression.
