I saw the difficulty in teaching English in Japanese schools many years ago, while dating a Japanese woman, whose little sister was in high school, so both of them wanted to try speaking English with me, but were too embarrased to feel comfortable about their level of ability. I got over that by speaking Japanese, and making myself intentionally bad in comical/funny ways, so that they could laugh and feel better about their level of English because my spoken Japanese level was apparently worse.
But after about 3 weeks of using the exercises in the sister's textbooks, I dedicated a week to writing a 200 page document of English language conversations that replaced the conversations in the book she already had. Through the wonders of photocopying, and the fact that my handwriting (no word-processing back in those days) was insanely neat, I later discovered that my document had been shared with the sister's entire class, and as far as I know became an unofficial part of the course material for later years. I received A LOT of giri choco that year, from most of the girls in the sister's school year and the English teacher as well. :)
Still none of them could talk shit, Japanese people are stupid and can't learn English.

As title says, Just got N1 but JP still is terrible.

Live in Tokyo but literally use JP like 5% in my daily life. And that 5% is daily conversation phrase type stuff which we all use, even N4 people. I passed N1 by studying and doing mock tests. My work and personal life is 95% English.

In terms of getting to truly business level Japanese, is there any real way without literally leaving my job and working at a domestic company as a slave for a few years? I'm sure I could get a job, probably paying beans, particularly if it was in the inaka.

I've attended a few of the rare meetings I have in JP recently and am just totally floored with how sometimes I wont understand things mostly due to speed or lack of vocabulary. What's worse, expressing myself speaking, saying what I want to ask is like...so bad its incredibly troubling. Either I can't formulate my idea properly, cant remember words or both.

Basically although I just passed N1, I feel like my JP is the worst its ever been. Can anyone give any advice on this? I cant be the only one in this sort of position

Also, the problem with immersion is not recognizing your own bias.
That is even more so of a problem in things related to sound. Pronunciation is like singing, you can't notice you are wrong until you improve and listen to yourself back then.
I do not have a problem with the method, depending on how you do "immersion" you can make it, assuming you spend most of your time on dictionaries and grammar as soon as you find something you don't understand and assuming you use a translation for every paragraph unless you are already fluent, to check if you are in fact understanding.
There are a ton of translators who make a lot of mistakes I can recognize in English but still I am not as good as them.
Recognizing someone else's mistake is easier than reaching their level.
It's like noticing a tune out of place in a concert and say, Oh that orchestra made a few mistakes! I am totally a better musician than anyone of them

I saw the difficulty in teaching English in Japanese schools many years ago, while dating a Japanese woman, whose little sister was in high school, so both of them wanted to try speaking English with me, but were too embarrased to feel comfortable about their level of ability. Through the wonders of photocopying, and the fact that my handwriting (no word-processing back in those days) was insanely neat, I later discovered that my document had been shared with the sister's entire class, and as far as I know became an unofficial part of the course material for later years.
