It is cheap fanfiction and the only reason why people read it is because by doing it CYOA style the readers thought they are important and actually helping out in a "GOOD" story. Even if the story is shit they will think it is good because they thought they contributed.

not really. it's because most of us read CYOA book as children and thought the concept was fun and neat. I'm guessing that's why a lot of us moved on to VN. CYOA is not like all that crappy stuff on ff.net that is hundreds of pages of mindless dribble. It is generally short(er than most fanfiction) and a fun way to share hypothetical situations involving our favorite characters and discuss the results. It is a pleasant way to play a game set in your favorite universe with other fans. The interactive threads like CYOA or the tournaments on /a/ or the touhou competitions here are the funnest parts of a chan culture which is primarily dominated by meme-spouting and tired reposts.
