I have a bit of a weird question
I'm making something free of charge. It's a mod for 100% Orange Juice.
I am taking various official music as well as fanworks from others (such as Touhou Puppet Dance and a fan expansion for it) and putting it my mod without their permission. If I did not do this, it would be impossible for me to make it. While it is morally questionable, I feel it's worth it. I find it unlikely I'd be able to obtain permission however.
If the creators of said fanworks were upset enough upon the release of my mod would it be legally possible for my stuff to be taken down?

whether it will be fine or not is depends on how much you want to publicize it and how much people you want to share your project with. i don't think they really give a shit if its just a project for you and your friends to play with for fun, but if you intend to share it on the official mod subforum for orange juice, please be wary of the possibility that might rise.
please ask the authors of the said works that you use, the worst thing they can say is no (or they will ask for a bit of money, but the possibility of this to happen is fairly low) and you might have to change the assets around but it's better than getting the whole project taken down if they're pissed.

I have a pretty amateur set-up, a 9 year old Laptop that I've kept all this time.
I'm not even sure if it can run MMD.
How easy is it to use & how many months would it take to reach an average/decent level of animation?
The reason for my hesitation is that I might get walled off months ahead due to some technical issue that I didn't foresaw.

For the record, I've seen derivative works that use official Touhou assets; Genius of Sappheiros, for example, uses bomb and extend sound effects, and there are countless fan videos on YT/NND that use official sounds, visuals, and music. To my knowledge, the only precedence for ZUN taking down projects with official Touhou assets is YouTube uploads of the music CDs. Not even the game OSTs, just the music CDs.

Anyways, honestly I wouldn't be too worried so long as it's free of charge. I see mods and other fanworks use Touhou music, both official and derivative, all the time without any complaints from the original creators. For clean work using PS, your best bet is to watch lack's youtube videos. Basically establish your loose lines then fill in with base colors, render and apply a clean linework on top (don't forget about lineweight).

I've been fuckin around with a Touhou MUGEN full game a friend helped make as a personal project. Person behind the unaltered version is working on a new one rn and he's commissioning Tasaforo style sprites for Nitori, Miko, and Kasen, so I can't wait to be able to see what I can do with em.

Sorry for shill btw, these are actually fun to play with. Also messing with this stuff as a personal project is teaching me quite a bit about fighting game design and coding.

Having hung out with people in the (incredibly volitile and autistic at times) community, I've honestly come to respect creators that actually wanna make quality work over the junk you see on say, SaltyBet or some e-celeb stream. I feel projects like Gensokyo Reloaded, and non Touhou examples like TMNTxJL and Shades of Manhattan 3 really shows that the engine is above dumb crap and Mortal Kombat compilations.

From what I've seen it's the same format, but not an exact clone. No grabs, shielding or items, and you can't grab ledges. Characters also tend to have a strong central mechanic, and/or moves which set up things that they can later interact with in multiple ways. E.g. Orcane's projectile leaves behind a puddle of water, and their other specials are "teleport to the puddle", "create an upwards burst from the puddle" and "lunge that's stronger if used while standing in the puddle" (all of which consume the puddle in the process). Meanwhile Elliana has a heat gauge and can vent excess heat by placing DoT steam clouds (but while overheating has significant drawbacks, it also doubles the power of their Smash attacks). A lot of customs try to keep up that design philosophy.

There seems to be plenty of flexibility though, because people have made characters that completely change the rules of the game. Giant bosses with multiple phases, HP bars and cutscenes, or even things like "Tennis Mode" and "SSB-style Shields" - characters who have no physical presence but add extra mechanics to the match for the other players.

3D anon here, a bit late but whatever. MMD models take a lot more work to convert than I had expected, had to teach myself the basics of Blender to fix all the little errors but it turned out decent in the end, the supports ended up a bit too thick and accidently snapped a bit of detail off while trying to get them off, I'll see how it looks tomorrow when I cut all the supports off.

Amazing level of detail, anon. Do you usually sketch that all out or do you just figure out the details while you're lining?

yea I can get lost in details, it's a very Zen process to me. I generally add them during lining, as drawing them twice would probably double the amount of time working on a pic. I do add some rough guidelines during sketching though, to have a flow to follow, like in this sketch.
