If you're a fan of the theory Ran is/was Tamamo no Mae, you can read out a dual character in Ran.

As the fox maiden of old, Ran would have been extremely deceitful and seductive, no doubt in some sexual context (although being hundreds of years ago and bound by courtly customs, probably not the context we'd assume today). But as Yukari's servant - after spending a couple of centuries in the Sesshoseki - Ran is a very different person, or rather she has discovered new sides of herself and found a new purpose in life. Put simply, she just enjoys being a sort of motherly housewife better than going around killing emperors and usurping thrones.

... but as with most everything else, the whole Tamamo no Mae thing is a fan theory as well.

When you think about it, it feels a bit strange to try figuring out what Ran's early life must've been like.

She would've been born in a long gone shallow den somewhere, just one of many kits to a pair of regular foxes, born foxes, and doomed to die as foxes. Her first years she would have spent in anonymity, knowing no name for herself, not caring for the passing of time as each day would've been much the same as that before. She would've wandered aimlessly stalking prey as the hunger drove her through the warmer months. Each Winter she would've stalked rodents under the snow, and every Spring she would find a mate and bear a litter of kits.
Everyday, no different from the one before for a hundred years, before the nameless, thoughtless fox eventually became Ran.

Like any other Touhou discussion, I doubt we would get a determination from Zun or even listen to him if it contradicted what we thought. But it seems that Ran is pretty much independent when Yukari is sleeping. Akyu speculates that Yukari wouldn't have made Ran her servant if she weren't already powerful in Perfect Memento.

In Bohemian Archive, Yukari said if Ran followed her instructions she would achieve power equal to Yukari herself, but if she took selfish actions Ran's power would be reduced to something that couldn't even compare to Yukari's, noting that fighting with humans was in direct contradiction with her orders.

So that means Ran is a natural EX boss "at her weakest" and that even Yukari can't control her at all while she's asleep... which is most of the day.

So, here we have the kitsune, or more specifically the nine tailed variant - one of the most terrifying animal derived youkai of collected Japanese folklore, or of folklore in general to be honest. With few exceptions, the most intelligent, most cunning, best versed in sorcery and to top it all off a predator to the core. Basically as a nine tailed kitsune you got the coolest toys on the block.

And yet, before a fairly simple gap dwelling youkai slightly powered up by the wording of the setting - commanding boundaries rather than plain gaps - this amazing beast bows down utterly selflessly and without a single excessive word.
