Would you anons like to start having a photo challenge in these threads? Nothing excessive, but I was thinking for people who want to participate, we could have themes like "take a comfy photo" or "have them help cook dinner" or something easy and fun that might inspire people to do more with their dolls, since a lot of anons last thread mentioned wanting to focus on that this year. What do you think?

Speaking of stands and stuff, do the anons here have any recommendations for good stands and other doll photo tools? I have the big ones from Alice's Collections and it's great, but it's also kind of a pain to lug around since the base is so big. Are there any other options for big DDs?

>> No.32693398

>>32691861
Yeah, stands are always a pain in the ass, it's the one perk that SmartDolls have with their little kicks stands. As for recommendations, it really depends on what you're looking for. Are you planning on doing a lot of outdoor photography, and if so, natural surroundings or cityscape? There are a lot of saddle stands with thin metal stands that are easy to transport and great if you want to bury the base in dirt for an outdoor photo, but there's a lot of setup for that. If you're looking for more spontaneous city photos, look into those loop stand that slide into their bases. It's easy to find one that is around the height of your dolls thigh that you can then hide easily by shooting around that.

If you're looking for stands for articulation of things like hair and clothes, obitsu makes assembly stands that can be all kinds of customized and extended for cheap. Pic related shows a couple of stands I own, the left most is a Cool Cat 12cm stand, the middle is a Dollfie World stand (I got this because I wanted a stand with a tripod mount) and the right most is a Selen stand. Out of these I prefer the Selen stand the most though it's a bit tricky to get outside of Japan, I got mine from yja. Though that said, I do prefer the thigh stand from Cool Cat when I have any of my dolls wearing jeans. The Dollfie World stand I only use for photo sessions.

I hear you anon, but we live in Danny's world and he is a fickle bastard. Unfortunately they're not on the site (I don't think there ever was a Cinnamon XL bust because it replaced Milk since Danny doesn't want any DD hybrids floating around,) and there aren't any for sale in the usual places either that I could find. Your best bet is to commission someone with a printer and see if they'll make you one. It'll take some more work, but it's better than nothing at all, yeah?

It's only relevant because of the EU customs laws. Don't worry about it. Also I don't think shipping is any bad outside of the US. The doll itself came from Japan to my country in two days on a weekend.
I have one more question though, is there a specific name or code for the color of the cinnamon skin? So maybe I can request that for the commission. Is there a way to determine it? Maybe from a png file?

You can get a hex code and maybe use that, but sharing photos can help as well- get a hex code and then try to find the closest matching pantone color though, they're for (paper) printing but people are familiar enough with them that it could help to get a closer match, perhaps? Good luck anon!

There is, but it's more for resin people -- I think Doll Dreaming has one? It's a vinyl-centric forum with boards for the major brands (DD, SmD, Obitsu etc.) Most of the community seems to have moved from flickr to instagram, and there are some people on facebook as far as I know (I don't have one personally, but I've heard of the community there through another friend.) There's also r/bjd, but I know how anons tend to feel about reddit. In the before times, people used to meet up at cons and other events with their dolls, but with the world being how it is right now, that's not a thing so much anymore. I'm sure you'll be able to find your own place in the community in time, anon.

The topic of making a BJD discord has come up here from time to time, but they tend to attract drama, and others feel they detract from the board culture. I'm personally ambivalent, but I always enjoy hearing what other anons have to say.

I definitely get that feeling -- it's easier, I think, because I live in a rural area and people here generally have a culture I call "fuck off and let fuck off" -- as long as you're not bothering anyone, people are content to let people do what they do. As much as I'd love to do city photoshoots... I would be more nervous setting up a shoot there if there were even a few people around. On the other hand, I've been told by urban friends that people in most cities are so used to weird bullshit that they don't question it anymore.

I can say from my own experiences that people, if they're curious, are usually positive about it. Maybe start small and go somewhere that isn't likely to be too crowded -- maybe a scenic overlook since it's off-season for most tourists, or maybe a park during the hours kids are still in school? If that feels too exposed, even just moving to another part of the room or onto a balcony or porch (not sure your living situation, the stairwell maybe) can be enough to give you new opportunities for photos. Most of the nature photos I take -- of insects, generally -- are taken on my back porch without having to go very far at all. I'm sure you will find a way to work with what you have, too. And I'd love to see it when you do.

My very first doll photo from years ago was just my little Azone Pure Neemo, Usagi, in her default outfit, sitting right on my old laptop. I'm not any kind of amazing artist like Zodake or another doll photographer, but I can say I have definitely improved from this first photo. But more important than that (and corny as it sounds,) I've had a lot of fun along the way. I genuinely hope all of you will find your own way to enjoy the hobby, too. After all, this thread is what started my interest in the hobby!

Plastics, especially vinyl, absorb smells easily. Sealers really won’t do anything about this. I know I’ve removed cigarette smell from vinyl toys before by putting them in a closed plastic box with fresh baking soda based cat litter. Maybe you could make a fabric sachet with baking soda and put it inside or near the doll to soak up smells?

Azone's stuff is in a strange scale, its closer to 1:3.4, which means its a pain to venture beyond the companys own offerings.

Petits kind of exist in their own category within Azone's line. Anything Azone makes in 45cm is for them and will fit properly. They can fit into stuff for 50cm, but lack the hips or the bust to properly fill out anything AZO2, even tops and bras that only really fit the C bust are a bit loose. They might be cross compatible with stuff for MDD/DDP to a certain degree, but will be a bit bagging assuming it fits in the first place.

I have a few Code Noir items that are designed with extra snaps and hooks to adjust to different sizes. You can spot them on the sales pages as the same item will usually be modeled on both an Angelphilia and an MDD. Some of the pieces I got look alright even on skinny mini dolls like Minifee, so that might be a good source for the Petit clothing.

I've bought enough random clothes that I have some tips fitting things. If it's too small in the back, you can expand it a bit by using some velcro tape as a closure instead. if your doll has long hair, a coat, or you only photograph them from the front, no one will notice. Things that are too big can be fitted with either mini hairclips, clothespins, or safety pins, whichever works for the situation. Obviously people who can sew have more options, but I am, unfortunately, a hack.

How do you anons feel about animals near your dolls? I wouldn't leave them unattended or let things get gross, of course, but one of my dogs (who is quite small and weird) is always interested in them and tends to rest his head in their laps whenever I have one with us on the bed or in the chair. As heartwarming as this sounds, I'd be cautious. I had a dog who was well behaved while I was around but he'd occasionally revert to his old chewing habits. Once he got a hold of something, it'd be impossible to wrestle it away from him as he'd just get excited thinking I wanted to play.

That's definitely a fair concern. I wouldn't let any of the other dogs here near them for that reason, I know one for sure cannot be trusted. Max is... a unique animal, though, so as long as I'm physically present with them, I allow him to sit with them.

TL;DR Basically Max is an older, adult rescue from a neglectful situation with a whole host of issues that we took over from his foster family. He has come a long way, and has a lot of problems I won't get into here, but one of them is that he doesn't understand what toys are or how to play with them. We've been trying to teach him, and he has at least learned how to play with the other dogs, but playing with toys or even gnawing on things meant to be gnawed on do not seem to make sense to him due to never being exposed to them. He didn't know how to eat from a bowl when he got here either -- eventually as we take him through the rehabilitation process I hope I will find something he likes to interact with, for his sake. It's for this reason that I am a little more lenient with him... at this point I'd honestly be thrilled if he ate a doll's hand. At least we've found something he's interested in, if so!

Pic related.

Does anyone have any tips or guides for wig care and maintenance? For example, how to fix mixed different-length hairs, such as longer hairs from the back of Chino's wig that got mixed with the medium-length hairs next to her bangs that hang in front of her shoulders. Also how to fix hairs that become curly from being tugged when combing. I bought a steamer and tried that, and I think it helped some but didn't fix it completely. Maybe I just need to keep at it some more? The guide doesn't have much information in the wig department, especially concerning these two issues which are the main ones I have experienced. A lot of the girls I see posted on twitter have such perfect hair and I have no idea how the owners keep it so nice.

Care depends on the fibers used, so unfortunately there won't be a lot of universally helpful tips. If the fibers are standard, Heat Resistant Fiber (HRF), mohair, etc. can have drastically different things that can be done to them. The only in general tips I can give you is for standard and HRF, a little wig treatment/conditioner will help with fly aways and strays. If there are a few hairs bugging you, you won't hurt much by plucking one or two strands out, and if there are longer fibers where there shouldn't be just cut them to length. Most human hair care products are safe with artificial fibers, just don't use anything perfumed or with acids. Also, if a product is human wig safe, it's generally doll wig safe.
For your curly hair, if the wig is HRF use an iron or hair iron on it's coolest setting and it'll be flat in no time. If it's not HRF, just brush it with a small brush (I keep a children's toothbrush around for just this, just make sure the bristles are flat) and starting from the top go all the way to the bottom, but don't PULL. I hope this helps a little.

I've had three different types of ponytail wigs. If it's the glued stump type, where they have the wefts held together with glue under the ponytail cover, then you're pretty much stuck. If it's the clip type, just unclip the pony tail and try re styling the hair underneath where it clips. If it's a natural pony tail (where it's just a long with with added wefts to allow up hair dos) then when making the pony tail make sure to center the pony tail and have the tie off around your fingers before you start. Good Luck!

Maybe! I think we all have imposter syndrome to a degree -- "everyone else here knows exactly what they're doing and I don't know a goddamn thing, and when they realize how inexperienced I am they're going to call me out for it." But this is a young hobby and a niche one at that. No one knows a shit nor a fuck about what we're doing, and the ones who know more than we do only learned by fucking up along the way and trying a bunch of different things to narrow down what gets the results they're looking for. I think it would be good for everyone involved if we shared more of our missteps along the way to our successes, honestly. Be kind to yourselves, anons.

How do the anons here feel about the new Snow Miku outfit? I like the idea, but for me the skirt is a bit... much.

I came here to look at cute dolls, not to be called out like that

For your troubles.

That said, I really do feel like this board is pretty accepting of people who are just getting into the hobby. At the end of the day the more people share their tips and encourage each other, the more cute doll content we all get. And honestly, as a long-time lurker, it's nice to see people's experiences, whether they're thinking about getting their first doll or they've just got their tenth (or more.) It's nice.

There's two days left on this doll's auction and she's already up to $3500 USD. Anytime I worry that I'm spending too much on my hobby I spectate the high-end auctions.

>order custom heads
>first one comes wrapped in paper towels
>second one comes wrapped in toilet paper
They're from two different sellers, one even put the head in a custom made pouch and both used washi tape and stickers to spruce up the packaging. Is this just a really good way to package them? Is it common?
It's just amusing to me since that seems like it would be such a cheap low effort packaging material, I can't help but be amused by the contrast

It's a cheap way to fill space to make sure stuff doesn't move in transit. A lot of people crumple newspaper to fill the same role.

Nono see I dont mean as a filler to the box
I mean the head itself is wrapped in it with washi tape around it

... That's hilarious, but now that I think back I think I've seen this too... maybe because it won't scratch the head?? It was paper towels in my case... what an odd little trend.

I'm coming into possession of an SmD XXXL bust... does anyone here have suggestions on what will fit that? Since Danny doesn't sell them anymore I'm unfamiliar with measurements, I'm just assuming from the name that it's stupidly overlarge.

A friend of mine won an auction for SmD Majesty and she came with a spare bust. They don't need the bust, so I'm buying it off them. I don't particularly want a bust this large because I am worried dressing her will be a nightmare, but I need a vinyl bust to replace the 'Cortex' one on a project body I have, so might as well go with that. (Project body has been assembled from composite parts on the cheap to go with a weird head I found on ebay which is, essentially, a DDH06 someone first tried to dye, failed, and then painted to match an SmD Cocoa body. It's been fun literally putting her together a bit at a time, but now I'm waiting for the weather to cut me a break so I can actually seal her head. It's too cold and wet here right now.
