How much do you think Cover will ask from talent to buy out rights to the character? Their contracts should have an ending date, basically the same situation as in European soccer transfer system: at some point when player doesn't want to play for your team you either sell player's contract to another team or force player to finish contract and then let them go for free. So if top talent doesn't want to sign a new contract then it's more profitable to sell character because otherwise it will be Kizuna Ai situation with replacement shit storm.

It's very different than sport. A team is just renting a player. A Hololive streamer gets everything from day 1 with 0 videos uploaded. Also the avatar, all official arts, channel, all sociall acounts are created by Hololive and is a property of Hololive. Streamer is the one who is renting the avatar. It's not actually the quality of the streams that stops me, I actually found the couple of really old streams I watched to be ok, even if they were awkward as hell. I get all your reasons, I wish I'd been there for her debut instead of being 4-5 months late and curse myself for only briefly following Miko ages before I found out hololive was a thing, but as it is, I've been with her for most of her vtubing career and witnessed most of the notable moments live so that sentiment has grown weaker over time. I've also skipped a bunch of very long text/story heavy streams for when I can absorb them more passively. When I went all out, dictionary in hand, watching Yakuza it was incredibly exhausting but I mined a ton. Usually what frustrates me is that I listen to some streams at work and my shit japanese combined with less than full attention makes me miss some facts, and that's when I feel like shit when they get brought up. Motivation to get better I guess

Recently I've been trying to make more of an effort to actually listen and understand what she's saying as well as pick up new words I don't know. When she's going at full speed though even if I go back to the archive and listen over and over it feels like all the syllables blend together. I'm curious what your cards look like from her stream, I know there's one guy with a hololive deck who includes all the conversational context around the word, audio from the stream, and a link to the stream but I'm new to making cards and have no idea what at least the bare minimum should be beyond just kanji, pronunciation, definition.

I knew about 700-800 kanji when I started watching hololive for listening practice, and with most of their topics new ones don't come up super often so I just study them when doing reps of the word they're in, never in isolation.
I only save the word itself with no context (but the service I use breaks them down into kanji, kanji into components, and provides an example sentence on a click) and just make sure I have a good idea what it means when doing review - typically have the best equivalent from either english or my native language in mind. If I don't feel confident that I could use it in a sentence I just look up examples when reviewing. I also keep seemingly redundant variations on some words as I feel it lets me 'get' the meaning, and not the translation, if that makes sense. With yakuza I was getting a a new word or two every 1-2 minutes during the story parts so it was rough doing it live. Switched to watching fragmented vods for kiwami because waking up at 5 am weekends was completely ruining my work week. Don't know what to say about catching words as identifying syllables isn't a huge problem as long as it's not just a string of several unknown words in a sentence. I do struggle with long vowel sounds like oo or ou in しょ and しょうor consecutive vowels spoken at high speed like in the うんえいさん mentioned earlier in the thread. Those require me to sometimes go through all the possible permutations of similar syllables to get the word in a dictionary. But I blame my native language for that, I mix up vowel sounds in english as well.
