Really, it all depends on what one considers to be ‘real’ and how one defines real to encompass things.

The concept of a fantastical land containing mysterious mythological beings is certainly real, and has been for a while if Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and certain Urban Fantasy works are anything to go by. Whether or not the concept is informed by reality or simply the imagination of the collective wishes of humanity for there to be something more in the world is the question that needs to be answered here.

Mythology certainly points to there being more mysterious creatures and phenomena that are intangible and unconnected with the rest of the world that exist. But scientists often attribute things that those mysterious creatures have been used to explain to different, more scientific reasons. One example is even in Touhou itself, being Kyouko Kasadani, who used to be one who created echoes, whereas now scientists say that echoes are created by the way sound bounces off of surfaces.

There are still unexplained phenomena in the world today, but most of those phenomena are assumed to have scientific explanations.

Now, from the perspective of the Touhou series, those scientific explanations are in fact what caused the creatures in mythology and folklore to wane in population. Therefore, they all retreated to hidden worlds - one such hidden world being Gensokyo in Japan.

So is it real? Who knows; maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. All I know is that there were a lot of mythological creatures in history, to the point where if some were actually real I wouldn’t be surprised.
