All right, here's my "unbias" opinion.
Get a PS3 as an investment. It's region free, but you really have to know what games you are getting, say about 5 titles you know for sure you're really interested in. I fucking hate idiots that buy a system THEN ask what games to get. Not what else they should get, but they bought a system because they heard it was "this and that" and then they want to know what to get.... jesus.

As a weeaboo, the Japanese Xbox 360 has interesting games, more-so than the American one to me. As some would say - just get the PC version of xxx-Xbox game. Since Death Smiles, Time Leap, and doujin games on the community boards are not available on the PC and the American Xbox is region restricted, it makes perfect sense to me to get a Japanese Xbox.
Just be sure you can find a repair shop cuz your warranty is NOT covered when you import a system. So if you get a RRoD you're fucked. I'm not sure the rate of those are for the JPN systems - look that up to make sure.

PSP has several emulators available if you are into that sort of thing as well as all/most PS1 games. You can play a few VNs as well though I don't know of anyone who does this personally. There is some stuff like Utawarerumono that was ported to the PSP as well but /jp/ isn't a big fan of that one anyway. There's a bunch other stuff it can do but nothing to do with game playing. There's a rather long list of JRPGs available on the PSP though a few of them are PS2/other ports such as Valk Profile etc.

I'm not sure what your tastes are in terms of games though and /v/'s recommendation list for the PSP is rather decent if perhaps somewhat incomplete for /jp/'s tastes. It lists all of 2 JAPANESE ONLY FOREIGNERS GET OUT games (macross frontier ace and hatsune miku vocaloid dive rhythm game. No mention of the idolm@ster games.) The upcoming titles look pretty good too including Persona (YOU WILL NEVER ATTEND JAPANESE SCHOOL), Valkyria Chronicles 2, and MBA clone (probably not giving it enough credit though) to name a few.

Nope, the old fat PS2 is in mint condition and works flawlessly. And yes, the slim PS2 is an NTSC-J unit, as is the white 360. Nothing special to say about the PS3 though, as it plays everything.
I should make it clear that I love all my systems though, even the crusty old ones. I don't owe allegiance to any particular system. In fact I think I like my really old stuff more than my new stuff.

You need a version at or before firmware 5.03 for the new PSP so just don't get any bundles and find a store with a good return policy. That or you can purchase a used PSP fat.

It costs no extra money for slim PSP modding outside of a huge memory card and a cable to connect your psp to your computer since it's all software. The cable is standard though so if you have a digital camera or PS3 charging cable or whatever, you can use that.

You use ChickenHen R2 which is an image exploit that allows you to load firmware into memory. Then you load the firmware. That's it, you can play games. However, because it's in memory, if you turn of your PSP, you will have to do it all over again. This isn't a problem since hardly anyone turns off their PSP - they just stick it in standby mode. To turn off your PSP you have to hold the power button up for 5 seconds. You can't flash anything permanently or modify anything like custom themes unfortunately if you are into that sort of thing. For me, it wasn't important.

I haven't noticed older PSP games looking that bad on psp 3004. However, Since I bought it in Hong Kong, I do get pissed at the reversal of the X and O buttons when compared to english games or when going from my PSP to PS3 or from PSP menus to english PSP games/cwcheat or whatever. i r so confused.
