I think it was meant to be some pretentious "Think about it on your own!" symbol of how the protagonists life was predetermined on some linear path, like train tracks, before he met whatever girl he chooses. The trains being long gone in the end means that he chose what direction he would face, and how he would get there.

I remember fuck all about the game though, shit was so average.
