It isn't, really. Muv-Luv Alternative is better than Muv-Luv, but it's not MUCH better.

Muv-Luv is incredibly polarising - it doesn't really 'work' for a lot of people. They don't like the heavy thematic disparity between Extra and Unlimited/Alternative, they don't like how inherently bleak and depressing the whole story is etc. However, generally, people that didn't like Extra + Unlimited haven't bothered playing Alternative, and Alternative is certainly better, but most of the people who play it are already 'on board' if you will.

I'm mostly talking about the flow, FSN didn't flow that well, basically the language was too bland.
Even a few synonym here and there would have done the trick, the translation of FSN was too straightforward making the whole thing kind of dull in english.
And adaptation shouldn't be completely straightforward.

From what I've read of Cross Channel, Ixrec did a great job at really adapting the script, making the whole thing actually pleasant to read.

Honestly most of the eroge in that top 10 are top tier and really indistinguishable quality wise.
Personally I have a weak spot for Swan Song and Himawari so I'm going to vote for one of them, and there is Ruitomo there too making it even harder to choose.

This ended much faster than I thought. Since the "sign up game suggestions" were around so long, I really expected a week or so for voting.

Oh well, I really wanted all of them translated anyway. (Maybe a little extra for Air and Ruitomo and flyable heart)

I doubt Air would have mattered, but perhaps the other two would have made a little more difference.
