Future Tone has over 200 songs while Mega Mix a little over 100 without DLC and over 170 with all the DLC.Although Mega Mix does have a few things over Future Tone besides the obvious portability aspect like Mix mode, T-shirt creator mode and the option to play on the touch screen with the arcade button layout. Your mileage on these extras will vary but Mega Mix is definitely a bit more than just Future Tone diet edition.

I can't tell you about the Vocaloid 3/4/5 engine, since I don't own it yet. (For all Vocaloid2 voicebanks, the Vocaloid engine is automatically included, but for any higher voicebanks(3,4,5), they come with piapro studio instead in which you can use the voicebanks. However you can seperately buy Vocaloid 3/4/5 if you don't like piapro studio). But for Vocaloid2 and all voicebanks, only up to 3 active owners/activations/PCs at once are possible.
With all voicebanks comes also a product registration code for the crypton website to get smaller updates and a registration code for additional software (some voicebanks have Studio One - a DAW/engine for music production - included). Those are only able to be activated for one person and crypton's support won't change that by request (even if you show proof of ownership) unless you are the original registered owner.

As far as I know, it's no different from official software. Since nobody has given you a serious answer about where to pirate, audioz has many voicebanks. But older links may be dead.

UTAU has more engine noise, it's more staccato, and it's generally more difficult to set up. You need to set your computer to japanese locale and spend a lot of time learning the program; Vocaloid is easier to use. However, UTAU can sound very good. It's not a bad idea to use UTAU before spending money on Vocaloid.

I get it, I had that fear too. But if they mention in the description they deactivated it, there's at least 1 space left and it's highly unlikely they're lying. In my experience japanese sellers are much more honest about stuff like that (because they're hyper anal about feedback in general) and when in doubt, you can still look at the positive/neutral/negative ratio of their feedback (or in case of yahoo auctions, you can read their feedback with google translate or DeepL). Depending on your shopping service, they might also help you or take returns if it doesn't work. However I'd be a bit cautious with big yahoo shops who sell a lot of used software, as they often don't get to check or confirm if the software is actually working since some random person just unloaded their items on them that they resell like a thriftshop. But from my personal experience, it always worked. I bought Miku V2, Miku Append, Miku V3 & V4, Rin/Len V2, Rin/Len Append and Luka V4x all second hand, both from private sellers, bigger shops and sellers who didn't mention deactivations and it all turned out fine.

In that case you can just contact either crypton or Yamaha, but don't directly mention you bought it second hand. They will give you a new replacement serial code. (there is a thread on VocaVerse about someone whose computer broke and they had the same issue).
It's just the additional software and crypton-website thing they can't help you with, because it's directly connected to a name and one-activation only.

you're welcome. i'll be happy to talk. just a fair disclaimer, i got a lot to say and most of what i'll be saying is based on observation. Also, I won't exactly be talking about songwriting yet. Before I do so, it would help to learn a little bit of psychology and philosophy. knowing this sort of thing can help you develop the foundation of success. If you're going to be a vocaloid producer, you might as well learn how to do it successfully. to be more specific, it would benefit you to know about the following and how to apply them:

>The Pygmalion Effect
>Perspective
>Empathy
>Intention
>Wisdom/logic
>Technique

just gotta start out small then work your way up big. this is as ground zero as you can get when it comes to learning how to make music. when it comes to more advanced pieces of art, you can apply far more artistic techniques, give the techniques a focus, and make the technique as complicated. but when starting off, you generally just want to start with making music that's all about image. gotta make sure you look good to people before you can convince them to listen to your music more. how you want to present yourself is entirely up to you. but you can't easily get up to there without a little understanding of the basics.
so what you can do for the time being is just take some time learning about what are the listed things above and look at some examples of said terms to get an understanding how what you can do.

for The Pygmalion Effect as an example, you basically just need to know what it is and remember that you can pretty much make music based around this concept. by making music that adheres to The Pygmalion Effect, you effectively reinforce the japanese idol culture by letting someone like Miku tell you that you're awesome and you're going to get through the day no matter what.

if you want me to talk more on the other things or the pygmalion effect, let me know. I get it that this may sound a bit off topic, but this is all relating to how to make vocaloid music anyways. if you're interested in being a producer, i'll do what i can to help you every step of the way.

I hadn't really considered image, i'm interested in trying to make different kinds of music and i'm not really expecting to get any kind of following.
Not sure how i feel about the Pygmalion effect, i think sometimes i wear myself down or create avoidant behaviour by expecting the best from myself all the time.
Maybe i'm misunderstanding, i do like the idea of using music to uplift someone or to tell them what they need to hear.
The other categories are very broad, and i wouldn't really know how to go about studying them for the purposes of songwriting except for perhaps technique.

I understand where you're coming from with this idea of being able to make your unique ideas a reality and not expecting to get a following. however, you mention that you might be expecting the best from yourself all the time. With all due respect, but that's a good indication you've gotten yourself into a nasty psychological trap. if you keep expecting the very best from yourself all the time, you might end up losing the motivation and enthusiasm needed to get to do what you want to do by being overwhelmed by stress and anxiety. my advice is try starting small and simple by making music that's light on the composition and sing about love, life, friends, and family. do that before you get to where you wanna go with your art. that way, it won't be as stressful or boring to make whatever you want to make. that's all i'm suggesting. part of being a very smart and successful person is being able to recognize the connection between two things or figuring out how two things can possibly relate to each other in your own imagination.
for example, Technique is practically just about *HOW* you can apply a particular detail to a vocaloid song. which vocaloid voice bank to use, which lyrics to use, how to tune the vocaloid vocal, etc. that's technique.
In my perspective, there is a connection between making a vocaloid song and what i've listed previously. the reason why it is so difficult to understand how they relate to making vocaloid music to begin with is due to the lack of experience. once you get started on actually making music, those sort of things may come onto your mind eventually. but i'm here to help save you the trouble from having to figure all of that out on your own. sometimes, these concepts just go way over our heads and we never learn of them.

10 years is too wide a timeframe to make any meaningful suggestions. There are a lot of very popular songs that have been released since 2012. Popular producers like MikitoP, GigaP, Deco*27, Kikuo, Mitchie M, etc. have all released multiple albums since then. That's not even getting into semipopular or niche-but-gold material.
Do you remember any songs you liked in particular? That might help narrow down something you'd like. If you really just want to know what's most popular, search on vocadb as suggested; lots of that will be from 2012 or later.

Miku is still the most popular. IA was popular for a few years, and V Flower is currently well used.
There are a lot of vocaloids (and other vocal synths) which are used by some, but don't get many original songs. Western fans in particular tend to be fond of many voicebanks, doing covers with them, etc. But that splits up the popularity between them so no one voicebank gets a huge following.

Some voices are very natural. Some are still charming/robotic.
Cryptonloids (including Miku) in particular are keeping the charming robot sound. Later Cryptonloid releases are more clear and crisp, but stil staccato.
Non-Vocaloid synths like SynthV and Cevio generally shoot for realism. Saki AI is a good example of a new, realistic bank. AI is the fancy new synthesis method.
You'll see both realistic and robotic voices. It's a matter of artistic direction.
