Atlantica Online takes place on Earth (a very scaled-down Earth, but that's pretty much a necessity unless the game is only going to span one country or something).

After quitting that and Mabinogi, I gave up on Korean MMOs completely (they were two of the best I'd played and still didn't cut it)

Right now I'm playing WoW; I swore I'd never touch it, but I found myself with nothing to do but play Touhou and Hearts of Iron 2. I needed an MMO to play and at that point it was either WoW or Runescape.

Great!

>>3177893
Well I'm not completely sure what to say. I guess It's a pretty normal mmorpg. It's just very well made. The game works well and is just fun. One fun feature I like is the pet system. You can capture or buy pets to fight for you. They can have their own skills and equipment, and they can really make a difference. You can also fuse with them to share their HP, skills and stats for a big boost.
Another thing I guess I like about this game is how there are always lots of quests. Always stuff to do. The only grinding you are going to do is also when it's required of a quest, because when enemies give 500 exp, and you need 3 million to level up, grinding is otherwise a waste of time.

Oh and the most important thing: The girls are cute and the equipment looks cool.

Thinking, at least on some level, about downloading this. I don't currently play any MMORPG, although I don't really know if I should either, as wasting my time hitting F5 and occasionally bothering to play or watch something is entertaining as well.

So, I skimread the mainpage/beginner guide and such, but care to explain the endgame/PvP/whatever comes to mind a bit more?

Oh, and the servertime is USA east/west coast time depending on server? I'd also suppose the majority of the players is from the USA - if so, does being from Europe have any drawbacks (Could figure ping, but more like regarding ingame features: raids/guild events and such)?

PvP works in the way that once you reach a certain lvl (40 iirc), you can kill, and be killed by other players when not in safe zones. Killing others gives you infamy points which I dunno what do.
Probably true about the time. Ping is not a problem. I live in denmark and the ping is always around 125ms which i think is pretty decent. No lagging. Also haven't had any problems because I'm from Europe.
About endgame, well... I'm lvl 48. One player so far has reached lvl 100 (not the limit). I don't think there are any big changes as you get higher up, as with most games.
let's see... skills. There are quite a lot. Something about the birthday you choose for your character also affects what skills you get. Don't know the details. Then there are Ethyr skills which are special skills you can buy, craft with a recipe or get as rewards for quests, and to use them you equip them like an item.
That reminds me of an important part of the game: To upgrade a skill you use Spirit, which you gain by killing enemies and getting as a reward for a certain quest. It's an interesting system that differs from most games where you get skill points by leveling your character.

I still play mabinogi from time to time. Nothing else is really worth it. When a game comes out that can have modern day graphics but still be in that generic anime style without visible angles on your body or weird shiny skin, then I'll look at it.

Even then I don't have tolerance for mmos where its just you and the enemy whacking each other and missing for seconds on end. I tolerated Luna because things died in one hit, but I can't play that kind of game anymore unless it's like RO where you can lure like 20 things on the same spot and kill them at once and pick up items that are dropped on the ground without any babysitting bullshit.

I wouldn't mind an online roguelike game though, where your equipment and thinking was more important. Giving certain users special items is dumb and the items themselves are dumb. They are only excuses to wave your dick around or get ganked. Else they're given to everyone and lowers their worth. Just make a bunch of useful items and if someone has a special one, it's because they got it to +10 +10 when it has like a growing chance of failing after +5 or something, and somehow got the vorpal enchant on it.

It'd be better if it was instanced based and you'd always return to level one after leaving a dungeon, and you'd just lose all the items and gold you gained in the dungeon if you died in a dungeon, without destroying your character. Pvp and gathering would take place in the outside areas.

There would be events with group dungeons, no rules, so you could be waiting one floor above the boss, killing everyone that came down there.

MMOs are multiplayer games. It's like wanting to play online FPSes, e.g. TF2, solo. It is not the way the game is intended to be played. Go play a single player rpg if all you want to do is grind in peace. A MMO world is for interacting with others, like it or not.

Go be a hikki somewhere else.

D2 is not an MMO though it's structure is a lot different. You could rush people through the game and reach 99 in about a week. MMOs are built on the grind in order to keep people paying, otherwise you'll never earn money, once people reach level/item cap they have little incentive to play. Convince people to grind for 3 months to whatever high level they achieve only to die and restart. Ain't happening.

With a business plan like that you'll end up in the slumps a week after your game is released. No, it's not that your ideology is bad, it's human nature who is your worst enemy.

Few people enjoy challenges, everybody wants new content, they want extra rare items with GODHAX stats, they want to be the unique snowflake, they want to boast their massive e-cock but they're not devoted enough to focus on a challenge.

The arguments are something like this:
"WAAAA CONTENT IS TOO HARD I CAN'T COMPETE/WORK WITH OTHERS、 SHIT SUX QQQQQQ I QUIT"

"LAWL CONTENT IS TOO EASY, SHIT'S BORING, NO REAL REASON TO PLAY"

>> No.3179629

You can't. Not online.

Fighting skill is related to the amount of lag you experience

Item equipping skill is related to your luck in getting them

Item using skill is related to money for buying them which is related to grinding

Build skill is related to a universal system and would ultimately lead to sameness

It would have to be turn based or something to allow for true fairness.

Because the current MMORPG combat system is flawed. It is always about dps and hps. It doesn't leave room for variation.

Now compare it with other game like shmup, racing, fightan, fps, rts and even dota. Those game need skill and test your reaction time and thinking ability.

There must be some way to translate those system into a playable mmo somehow.

This is what MMOs need to get rid of first. They ALL, EVERY ONE, treat your character like you're the one and only hero in a single player RPG going through the world. NPCs act like other players don't even exist. It is what leads to that idea in the first place.

There really needs to be more of a focus and community related things rather than measured grind and "UR R #1 HERO, PC!"

MMOs keep people though grinding but they also keep people through socializing. If they could make a truly social game with RPG qualities, they wouldn't need leveling and all that. You'd just go grind resources to make stuff and talk to friends.

It's a shame that Second Life is the only real MMORPG as it is the only one that actually is both MMO and has true roleplaying and no grind.

If only there could be a better looking, furfagless, more console rpg-like version of that.

You can make different classes with different strengths and weaknesses without screwing over all of them in the process.

Take WoW for example. Dear lord I hated that game. A level 70 Warrior could kill Arlokk while a level 80 Mage or Priest didn't stand a chance in hell. Death Knights can solo Karazhan while, again, a Mage or Priest probably wouldn't be able to *reach the first boss*, much less kill it.
That is because they overspecialized tanks to the point where other classes take 30 times more damage. I noticed that when my clothy was one-shotted for four times my max Health by a trash mob.
I'm not saying you should be able to play all of MMOs solo, but they usually have zero challenging solo content. Using WoW as an example again, they had an epic Hunter quest that was mildly challenging, but dropped the concept quickly and now every single thing (beyond the short leveling process) requires groups.

Depending on finding 39 non-retarded people to play with got old, fast.

They could have made, say, "solo instances" or "class instances" so we could pass the time between raids, but they thought people would stop trying to get their friends to play. Instead people are bored out of their minds and quitting anyway. Hah!

This doesn't matter. And all the other games you mentioned have hp.

>shmup
stop using this word.
>shooters
This isn't really workable on a large scale, though it could be skill based. Imagine playing touhou or castle shikigami or some other game with 2 second input lag

>racing
Lag into walls. Also can you imagine a race with like 1000 other people? That would only work in some sort of space race.

>fightan
MMO fighting, really? It could work only in large scale battles, but that needs a large userbase who like working together.

>fps
Lag will either get you killed or make you invincible.

>rts
The only workable thing but would still depend on computer controlled units, which would either kill the servers or be dependent on your computer's ability to send commands.

>dota.
bad, feel bad, etc.

>test your reaction time
3 second input lag.

>There must be some way to translate those system into a playable mmo somehow.
no. in Japan maybe. Not out of it. Internet isn't good enough yet.

3rd person shooters like space cowboy or eve or pso are workable, and large scale pvp is workable. small scale combat is pretty much better left to games based on small scale conflict.

You could probably make workable systems out of all of them, but you would endure legions of butthurt from those who couldn't play it right.

It was something like, megami something or tenshi something. I don't recall. It was a 3d rendered game where you catch demon and angel pets and use them to fight and catch more pets while you fight. He had some bondagy looking angel chick that hated him because he'd just gotten her.

I already have the perfect MMO model. Players choose between honorable hard working proletariat classes like farmer, factory worker, and bricklayer. They take back the means of production from the bourgeoisie and then collaborate to meet their work deadlines and help build Communism. All loot is given by the state for completing deadlines and displaying loyalty.

I'm still waiting on Netdevil to finish Jumpgate Evolution (getting tired of waiting is largely why I started playing WoW, I was counting on JGE to be my next game). >I dont see how there will be lag issue with 20-40people at the same instance.
When Wrath first came out and everyone was doing Naxx there was lag because the servers were shit and couldn't handle instances being made, made everyone lag to a point where raiding was impossible.
Wintergrasp cause world lag in Northrend because Blizzard still used the same shit servers.

Do you know their solution? They nerfed the benefits one gains from Wintergrasp to a point where one didn't really need to step into the zone more then once a week.

Before the game used to have 60-80 players on each side fighting each other, before I left, there weren't more then 25 players on each side (20 of em would be Death Knights anyway, the other 5 would be Paladins). The only incentive to play was the dungeon one could only visit by having control over the zone. And that dungeon in and of itself was nothing more then a loot pinata.

Don't get me started on why wow lags so much now compared to Vanilla, and no, it's not because of shiny new textures.
