I play in windowed mode since I hate having a shitty quality but most of the VNs have small screen (800/600 and smaller).

Well, I couldn't find a manual for that exact model, but I found one for a similar model. It doesn't appear to have an option for preserving a 4:3 aspect ratio. The only thing that I saw that might do it is Auto Adjust, but I don't have an LCD, so I'm not really sure what that does.

It's treating your monitor like a regular CRT monitor. A bit of searching revealed that your monitor came with a VGA cable, when it really should of come with a DVI cable. I don't know if the monitor is limited in that way, and I might be thinking backwards, but if your video card came with a VGA to DVI adapter (it will be small, only about an inch square, one end of the adapter will be white) try using it.

Well, you'll learn more about Linux just from solving any problems you might encounter. If you're asking about applications, I couldn't really say without knowing what you use your computer for.

As for other operating systems, if you're asking for another operating system to use as your main OS, you could look at different Linux distributions, and see if you find one you like.

So here I was playing Battlefield 2 on my laptop.

Recently, for some reason, whenever I play this little window would pop up in the corner of my screen. This happens occasionally when I press keys on my keyboard, and it flashes for part of a second before disappearing.

On closer inspection, it seems to be some sort of search bar or something, as from what I can tell it consists of a text field and the typical magnifying glass search button.

Also on occasion, the words in the text field would be converted into Chinese characters, likely due to some key combination I unknowingly pressed.

I have also found that when I Alt-Tab in and out of the game, another toolbar appears with several buttons, including what seems to be the crescent moon "Sleep" button.

My laptop runs Vista.

Every once in a while, my computer crashes. I have to restart it manually. Then some strange vertical blue bars appear on the screen after the loading windows logo. Then, I have to restart start it manually again, then the windows repair bullshit launches, and after 10 minutes, it works again. Until it crashes again.

The crashes occur sometimes when I do nothing in particular, but then happen really often when I try playing Touhou, or when I watch some video. Also, when the crash occures, the sound gets blocked as well as the image on the screen, and the quality of the image goes down, like going down from 32b to 16b colours.

One time, and only ONE time, I got a message about how my nvlddmkm pilot had crashed and had been restored. This didn't happen again.

As for the computer, it's not even 2 years old (I bought it in january last year), and it was brand new and on the top of the technology two years ago. 2 Gb of RAM, pentium 4 2.6GHz, vista etc...

I didn't answer most of your question... With those instructions, you can drag the mouse to the other desktop giving you more space for icons, windows and stuff. You can maximize a window for 1 monitor and do stuff in the other but that does not work well with full screen games or videos for me.

I'm trying to trim the fat on my computer. Any suggestions? I'd really like to be able to go into task manager and only seeing the fifteen or so processes that are essential for the computer to run. Perhaps you could help me with a problem I am having.

I'm sure you are familiar with the UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME blue screen of death error. The problem I have is that I constantly get this error everytime I restart my computer. I can usually get around this error and boot into Windows by going into the Recovery Console and using the fixboot and fixmbr commands, but I will eventually get the bsod error again when I restart.

So pretty much I have been using Standby to turn off my machine, but I still have to restart every once in a while to update drivers and etc.

Think you could help?

Depend what are you backuping, usually cannot save space by backuping movies. Otherwise it takes less space since your backup can be compressed. (works like a huge ZIP archive kinda), so you can save 20-30% space something (especially true if you have lot of CGs in BMP etc...).

As for a software, I'd recommend you Acronis True Image.

In Microsoft Excel, when you rotate an object, it auto-snaps into position every 45 degrees. In most software, when you are moving/resizing/rotating/etc. something and it auto-snaps/jumps to certain values, you can disable the auto-snapping by holding down a button like alt or shift or whatever, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to turn off auto-snapping when rotating objects in Excel. This is really irritating because I get a lot of stuff faxed to me at work as pdf files which I have to copypasta into Excel documents, and the faxed documents are always tilted just a few degrees to the right or left, but I cannot rotate the damn things just a few degrees in Excel because of the stupid auto-snapping. If I want to fix the crooked documents I have to first paste them into some other program like photoshop, rotate them, then re-paste them into Excel.

Oh, actually, I do have a slight problem myself.
I've set up a Wireless access point using a Wifi max, but the DHCP won't work on it, meaning I have to manually set up static IP addresses for the access point and any other devices connecting to it. This isn't the issue though. The problem I'm having is that I can't forward ports to any devices, and from any of the devices, connect to any external IP address (say for instance, I can't connect to game servers).
I'm not entirely sure if this is because the DHCP is not working or not, but I can't seem to be able to get it working for the Wireless AP. Any idea how to activate DHCP? I've tried looking the in the windows services bit and it says it's already running, so any further than that I've no idea.

The fan seems to be working fine. Temperature of CPU when I'm just browsing is at 44-46. I also live in a tropical country, so temperatures are higher than what you may be used to seeing.

Do you think I should buy some compressed air? I cleaned my CPU recently but only with brushes, so maybe there's a part of the processor unit that I didn't quite get.

Okay, so I'm having problems connecting to others on the latest Touhou and I know its on my end because seemyport.com can't connect to it. I've forwarded the port on my router but still can't.
It appears you have the port forwarding set up, but nothing is answering on port 10800.
"Possible Causes:
* Did you forget to start some software on your computer?
* Is your router forwarding to the correct IP address on your local network?"
Any help at all is appreciated.

What?

>>3181003
You can try cleaning it with compressed air if you like, but dust shouldn't cause it to overheat.

Can you download and run CPU-Z (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php)), and take a screenshot of the CPU tab?

Also, is it a pre-built computer, or did you build it yourself?

Oooookay. I tried playing Melty Blood AA on PCSX2. Core #1 temp jumped steadily, and when it hit 90 I panicked and closed the game. (Core #2 was at 75 at that time.) I guess I never tried monitoring it with emulation before...

I had a mysterious port forwarding error like this one with Scarlet Weather Rhapsody. It turned out that the cause was Comodo Firewall, which I had instructed to let th105.exe access the Internet but had decided to disobey.
Try turning off your firewall and hosting.

Does your computer have a static IP address? Also, as the site mentioned, the port will appear closed if the game isn't open and listening on that port. Are you checking the port while the game is listening on that port?

>> No.3181192

>>3181154
No, not static. And yeah, I've tried it with the game on and off. At most I can sometimes spectate others, but thats it. I've done as Jones suggested and disabled my firewalls but it still can't find my port and no one can connect. Hmm...

OK, the voltage is fine. The heatsink is probably not properly contacting the processor. You should try applying new thermal compound.

>>3181192
If your IP address isn't static, it could have changed to a different one from the one the port forwarding is set to. You are talking about your LAN IP address, right? I should have been more specific.

Hmm, thanks. I'll see who I can bug to do that, to be sure. (I had the processor pre-installed at the store, and put the rest together at home.)

Sorry, I'm not too knowledgeable about this. The IP that whatismyip.org gives me is always changing. Thats about all I know.

Open up the command prompt and enter "ipconfig" (no quotes, of course) to see your local IP, router address, etc.
Chances are it's static.

You'll need to assign your computer a static IP address through the router's web interface. Do you know how to do that?

Er, no. If you could just point me to a page on it I'll try to figure it out. I don't want to eat up too much of your time.

I think this is the correct manual for your router:
http://www.2wire.com/pages/pdfs/2Wire_1000_User_Guide.pdf
You'll need to assign your computer a static LAN IP address through DHCP and set the ports to forward to that IP address.

>If you could just point me to a page on it I'll try to figure it out. I don't want to eat up too much of your time.
Thank you, I really appreciate it. I probably should be going to sleep soon.
