I went through Genki I and Genki II with my own custom Anki decks. I had 93% correct over the life of that study, so I think I can help a bit. It took me like 10 months to do the books. I didn't rush (I was also doing other stuff like listening to Japanese, which is outside the scope of Genki). I was trying to make sure I got all the sentences and words in Anki.

Here are my tips:

You shouldn't lie to Anki. You're sentence about hitting the wrong button to try and manipulate Anki really sits badly with me. I have alternatives below.

If you wanna cram or brush up on something, set up a "custom study session". Don't hit the wrong answer button to try to manipulate how it lets you study so you can cram something. You can do this with things you got wrong, or you can mess with tags, etc. Learn about this option.

Do not add too many cards a day or you will be in Anki Hell and your reviews will take forever. Here is how you do it: pick an amount of time you want to do Anki, let's say 45 min. If your study goes over 45 min, do not add any cards. Not even one. If it is < 45 min, add 6-12 new notes (12-24 new cards if you use front-and-back).

You probably already did this but if not, read the manual. Really!

When I learn a new word, I often don't slam it directly into Anki. Rather, I use Anki for knowledge RETENTION rather than ACQUISITION. To acquire the word, I write five new words on paper and then cover them up with some paper or my hand. Try to say the first word? No? Remove your paper which is covering it up. Yes? Try to say the second word. Etc, until you can say all the words without peeking under your paper. Then come back later that day and do it again. If you can make it through, then you slam it into anki.
