JobCorps, motherfuckers. It's essentially the same thing as the military (free food, money, housing) except you walk out with job skills you can actually use. And you don't have to be shot at or get brainwashed! I've heard that some of the lodgings are downright shitty, but it isn't too hard to get yourself moved to whichever part of the country you want. No. Volunteer soldiers are scum: no exceptions. They make a living in death and destabilize our security through overseas ventures that only stretch our nation's reach further and thinner. We need return to pre-Roosevelt mobilization patterns, and anybody who signs up for the armed forces is perpetuating an inefficient and immoral Cold War mentality that saps our nation of its wealth and our global neighbors of their sovereignty and livelihood.

It depends on your position. I would say that an infantryman in the United States Armed Forces who is treading upon soil that should not be encroached upon and firing at people who should not be fired upon (read: basically anybody since 1864) is guilty of a laundry list of crimes, even if it was ordered by superiors. It's a bit different from being an office lackey in an industry that exploits third-worlders or something. It's more akin to being a factory manager at the Nike plant in Bumfuk, Southeast Asia. At the end of the day, you signed on to make a living doing the bidding of some of the world's most heinous murders. It's rather difficult to wash your hands from this.

I can't believe people think the Army is hard. You gotta seriously be lacking in every possible way for a tiny bit of hardship to bring you down.

Even when it sucks its absolute worse, it's nothing compared to say, Vietnam, Korea or the World Wars. Shit's a walk in the park compared to the men who went before us. I wish I could hold a candle to the bravery of guys who went and fought, even when drafted. That's what it means to be a man, accepting your responsibilities in life, whether or not you agree. If you want zero chance of being forced to fight, you really shouldn't be a citizen, since it's part and parcel of the deal in this country.

On that note, I'm perfectly fine with moving to the Starship Troopers type of government. (the book, not the movie) Military service required to be a citizen, only citizens can vote, if you're not a citizen, you're a civilian.

Seems like a good system to me.

I think your perception of reality and the actual reality are worlds apart. I'm afraid your concept of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan do not match the reality of either. Excepting specifically authorized missions to destroy suspected high value targets, the rules of engagement as so tight these days that you're better off not shooting at all, even when fired upon.

Lest you drown in a sea of paperwork.

Sorry, the painted picture of run and gun patrols through innocent villages is not the reality. I rarely fired my rifle, and as a mortarman only was called to fire on hostile forces four times, with rounds on target only once.

That's just how it is, day in and day out running around, getting shot at and blown up without knowing the enemy at all, essentially, you roam around and make a nuisance of yourself and try to catch someone doing something blatantly illegal. But don't shoot at them unless your life is in critical danger, and by critical danger, I mean you're already dying.

Regardless though, the hands that placed the hands of the world's most heinous murderers are whose? In a representative democracy, we're all the murderers. Even if you voted for the "other guy", because, brotip: they're all the same, they just change three or four opinions on some meaningless public policy issue for our benefit.

Notice how the prosecution of the war is going exactly the same, only now it's in Afghanistan again? Ah, surely now it's because we're looking for Bin Laden and not for oil, right?

Like we'll ever see a drop of oil out of Iraq anyway, shit's going straight to Russia. None of the things most people believe mean anything, the powers that be move around at their own whims and for their own purposes, our little illusion is that we have some modicum of control over what the suits that show up on TV say. The reality is that we have as much control as they do. None.

So, that's the world through a veterans eyes. You guys have it colored from one side, and I have kindly filled in the rest. The world certainly isn't what anyone says it is, there's no right answer, and even if there was, either the common people would oppose it for some reason, or the empty suits would oppose it for another. I'll dispel this one a bit too, it's a favorite of many internet elitists.

It's certainly true that, on average, a military person is less educated than those not. There are outliers, like myself, of course, but most are your average bottom 50% of their class sorts.

What military training is, surprisingly, is extreme focus on rapid decision making and response to incredibly complicated and stressful situations. It's less so for privates, but as you gain rank and responsibility, you have to be able to see a developing situation and react in the way that achieves the objective and minimizes casualties. I promise, it's not very easy, it requires quick thinking and solid decision making.

But, your point is more about general education, isn't it? Again, I can't strongly refute that, but, the idea behind military service being required for the right to vote is that you have to invest something into the country in order to make decisions about it. There were others who could vote, in the system, peacecorps types, police officers, those sorts of people. But guys that went to work in some corporation could not vote, as they were not investing in the security of the nation. Or something like that.

To me, it makes sense. Most people who feel outrage and entitlement in a country like ours don't actually pay income taxes, they get it back. They just work here and do their thing, contributing nothing, taking plenty and complaining the whole way.

That's something I am against.

Hrm.
A soldier risks his life to defend his country, which is admirable (assuming he's defending), but actually costs the country quite a lot since he generates zero income and requires a huge investment.
General people working and paying close to 50% of their income in taxes do invest in their country... they pay for a lot of things, including education.
Just saying, people should have a say based on their own individual merit. Considering that some soldiers are geniuses and some are morons, something as arbitrary as military training sounds completely random to me.
In any case, a "voting" system is more or less a tyranny. They make you choose between a couple groups with very similar agendas and that's it; you don't actually have a say in any serious matter.
With a population this large I don't think there is any system that's gonna work for humans.
