Being super cute and also dumb/earnest enough to spend her last yen on a Karaoke room to stream her singing while literally not being able to afford food and skipping eating for days at a time. I wouldn't say she's mediocre, and I wouldn't say that about the dozens of other talented indies out there that have yet to find their audience.
She's a great singer but has a lot to improve on in other areas. I find her charming but that's just my personal preference and developed attachment.

The holothread had a semi-regular occurrence of some anons linking random indies with the lowest live viewers they could find during early morning hours JST when there were no hololive streams to watch.
None of those indies gained any attention besides a few pity posts and 30 extra viewers for about 20 minutes, but when Aoi was linked the thread was all about her for a good while and she reached 160 live viewers which was 20 times more than her usual according to herself.
I believe that the event in that thread back then and her continued growth are signs of Aoi being something more than the droves of indies and small company vtubers that sadly never get anywhere.
She doesn't even do anything to pander to a specific audience, she just does whatever she likes, whenever she wants to.
