Don't forget to play Richter mode in every game whenever possible, don't upgrade your equipment unless it's absolutely necessary to pass an obstacle, and no grinding. Castlevania was originally one long hard slog through a castle where the very stones beneath your feet are out to kill you. You're not getting the authentic experience unless you're screaming like a banshee after you get knocked to your doom for the umteenth time.

>>3141021
OoE was the best Castlevania in 10 years. It started out a bit slow, but it in the end it combined the old stage-based gameplay and the whole Metroidvania thing quite well.

The 3D ones are mainly worth it for the music; they have some of the best stuff Michiru Yamane has ever done. Curse of Darkness was especially awesome for music.

I like this game and all, but I just don't like the bosses at all. I can't really explain it, they just annoy the shit out of me. When I think fun danmaku/platformer hybrid bosses, I definitely think Megamari, and I guess this game isn't going to change that.

A somewhat minor gripe I have is that the sensitivity for controlling your jump height feels rather off. I was hoping they'd fix that. More annoying are the extremely large hitboxes that everything seems to have (unless you're flying).

Also, Ecclesia is just plain the best castlevania if you ask me, save for maybe SotN in the sense that it's the only one where I really cared for the non linearity that the metroidvanias all tried to emulate. In fact, I'm probably not enjoying this as much as I did the demo because I was just playing through OoE, which makes this feel a lot weaker in comparison. I guess I'll come back to later when it'll feel a bit more fresh.

I agree. The bosses are terribly weak sauce. If you are really only in danger by trying to attack the boss, then it is a shitty boss.

Plus, again, they are trying to do the same FLYING DANMAKU style for every bitch in the game, which is just a tremendous lack of creativity, in my opinion. Not only does it make every boss the same style, but it wastes the potential of a fightan kung fu Mei Ling or a knife fight with Sakuya.

Megamari wins this one.

I just want to finish this and see what the final boss is like.

Then I suppose I'll stick to the term "bullshit" instead of "artificial". The kind of shit where you just stop and wonder "Wait, why is this difficult? There is such a simple solution, why does the game not allow me to do it?". Or, from the other end "Why is this enemy behaving this way? It could do a much better job of attacking me, so why doesn't it? Why is it so suicidal?" An example of the latter is a boss with a weakpoint you need to exploit that's only available during an attack. Like the final boss in Terranigma (both forms, actually). You are unable to directly damage Dark Gaia's first form, you must reflect the light orb back to it. The second form is capable of moving outside of your reach. Why does it ever move within your reach? You literally would not have a chance to win if not for that. So why doesn't the boss do that? That is the bullshit I'm talking about. It's poor design.

>The second form is capable of moving outside of your reach. Why does it ever move within your reach? You literally would not have a chance to win if not for that. So why doesn't the boss do that? That is the bullshit I'm talking about. It's poor design.

I sure would love to play a game with a scenario in which I can't really win.

It's like I'm really getting gang raped!

You're confusing "realistic elements", logic, and conventional game mechanics. There's so many ways you would NOT want your game to be an accurate reflection of the real world that it's not even funny.

Who would want to play a FPS in which one bullet hits you, and then either kills you or maims you so you can't do anything else. Or a FPS in which after you die, it uninstalls itself to accurately reflect having only one life.

That would be a good example of very poor game design. I argue that a boss that is sometimes invulnerable but voluntarily decides to let you hit him is also poor design, obviously not as much as your example.
How about instead of going to that one extreme, you have a boss that is never invulnerable and is instead difficult for other reasons?

Because limitations of time, mechanics, player input, and many other things make it difficult or unfeasible to implement a way of fighting which reflects a truly intelligent method of fighting for the A.I. to use that also doesn't result in the complete and utter rape of the player.

Also, that sort of thing is a theme. You're approaching this in a way that makes me think you would complain about turn-based fighting systems because they don't represent an accurate flow of time in comparison to the real world.

Why doesn't he fight from higher ground, so you can't reach him? Because then we'd have to implement a Z-axis, and because then we'd have to implement a way in which you could counter it without him devastating you. Why doesn't he just run away and kite you with ranged attacks? Because then we'd have to find a way for players to prevent this tactic so that they don't end up putting their fists through their monitors in manic anger.

I do dislike Fallout's system, since it allows you to a) sneak past enemies by running right in front of them and b) shoot someone and then hide without giving them a chance to react

There's only so much you can do to make fighting realistic before it becomes an unending recursion of "I DO THIS.", then "OH NO YOU DON'T, BECAUSE I DO THIS!"

You have to pick a system and way of presenting it that lets you get the most out of it that you can, but remain simple enough to be consistent, affordable to make, and easy enough for the player to get into.

I'm sorry that full-motion fighting hasn't been developed to your satisfaction, yet, but to my knowledge there is no motion-capture bodysuit or neural uplink that lets the player function in unrestricted 3D movement.

Things like Fallout/Oblivion with their sneak system... well, sorry, that's pretty much a restriction of all current games. There's not an easy system that lets you determine whether or not you can be seen or not, nor one that provides the physics for crawling all over objects in real time, like someone who was really skulking would do. You could make it, but how are you going to implement it so that the player can use it?

Answer the question, design the system, and sell the technology for an ungodly amount of money. Then, use the profits to fix more gameplay limitations.

Just as long as you don't start fucking with my SNES games and "WHY CAN'T I FIRE IN FULL 360 DEGREE MOTION?"

They're fucking classics for a reason.

You misunderstand that bit. I mean running past someone in COMBAT mode, not sneak. Because the enemy cannot do any kind of movement while you still have AP, you can use this to sneak past enemies or duck behind walls before they can strike back. A notable example of this is that in FO2 you can get into the Vault City vault early by starting combat and just running in. The guards don't stop you during combat so you can get into the vault without being a citizen. I'm fairly certain that even 300% sneak won't let you do that.

>Making a game fun and playable instead of realistic and frustrating? No, I don't see that as bad design.
I do not find the castlevania games I've played fun. At best a time waster for a few hours. I do not find it fun to be unable to hit an enemy directly above me. I do not find it fun to be assaulted by enemies that can fly through the fucking walls. I do not find it fun to take damage by walking into a zombie that popped out of the ground right in front of me. I do not find it fun to defeat an enemy by sticking out my whip and then having the enemy literally walk into it. If you find stuff like that fun, then I guess this boils down to lolopinions.

>to my knowledge there is no motion-capture bodysuit or neural uplink that lets the player function in unrestricted 3D movement.
That's not necessary. My claim is that Castlevania does not handle the limits well. In Doom, it is impossible to jump. This does not hamper gameplay in any way, because it is never necessary to jump.

I think you misunderstand the point of these games. "Back in the days" games were made from testing around with various ideas and then, if something was fun, sticking with it. Realism or convenience had nothing at all to do with it. Most games even profited from exploiting the faults in the engine (Doom as a grand example).
If you complain that you can't do something, which would completely change the gameplay, then you just don't want to accept the game. It's like complaining that the milk you bought doesn't taste like strawberries. That would be cool, but it would also be something completely different.

The whip is a magic vampire killer. Next, you'll be complaining that knives in other games can slash through people that are wearing full-plate armor, or that fans are capable of inflicting massive damage, or any other thing that would be realistically impossible but works in games.

What, are you going to complain that Rockman can't duck in the early games, too?

Some things aren't design flaws, but rather design elements. They are what make games unique to themselves, such as Rockman's slide, which doesn't make much sense in a 3D context, but is brilliant for 2D levels.

>I do not find it fun to be unable to hit an enemy directly above me. I do not find it fun to be assaulted by enemies that can fly through the fucking walls. Those aren't necessarily flaws, but rather things that are hallmarks of Castlevania games. Simple mechanics from a time when it was cutting edge. And you know what? They're still fun.

Yep. That's true. I don't want to accept a game where attacks can only go straight in front of you, and changing that certainly would force everything else to be redesigned. The difference is that I think it would be better, because I honestly do not find games with such flaws/design elements enjoyable.

This is from memory, but take the small shots, not the big shots. Then she flies or some shit. The laser spiral has some wonky hitboxes, but you can dodge it usually.

Don't touch her. She does pretty big damage.

I think after than she lands and just fires straight at you. Easy to dodge.

After that, she'll rev up and SPEAR THE GUNGNIR. The spears are 60% damage. The lasers up top are glitched hitboxes. You're usually safe up top. Then she'll teleport and start again.
