Well I'm Chinese and when I went to Japan I was confused for a local. Got yelled at in Japanese by a cop for jaywalking when no cars were around. My white friend just got an awkward "Please be safe" from the police. Store owners talked to me when me and my white friend were there. Whenever he said something in Japanese they would look at me to repeat it otherwise they didn't understand.

Japanese, Koreans and Taiwan-type chinese all look similar. But the rest are easily none of the 3 and usually the latinos/slavs of asia.

In america, asians that are of races that aren't very famous or have any famous notable achievements tend to call themselves "asian" rather than "filipino, malaysian, thai". But, Japaense, Koreans, Chinese prefer not to be lumped together. Especially Koreans and chinese hate being called the same as *ghasp*, evil Japanese.

Most of the people in my area usually put out their racial distinction even if they aren't Chinese, Japanese, or Korean. I hear people mention they are Filipino, Vietnamese, Indonesian, etc. all the time. I do have to agree about the white washed ones referring to themselves as Asian though. In addition to the white washed ones, the mixed race Asians also tend to refer to themselves as Asian.
