The earliest I remember of MMD was great. The shorts, skits and so on were great.
I remember some using the Medoka Magica girls for random stuff, and one for a TF2 skit. It's still mind boggling to see how much things have progressed. The old videos have something in them that can't be replaced, but the new videos have something to marvel at if done correctly.

Whenever I see Miku, I think of Huke's BRS. They appeared at around the same time. Funnily enough, people thought BRS ripped off Hatsune Miku when it had existed prior. That, among many other things to follow. Too bad it never really took off. A game and a manga here or there. There was quite a few things that series had to offer. The MMD scene was quite small, but the models were used, garnering about the same amount of views as the regular models.

Really? Miku release date was late august (her design was known prior, but she was a nobody), BRS art was published on pixiv on late december of the same year. Not saying it was not a coincidence (unless Huke was already in the talks with Ryo and Mikufied his design in preparation), but it does seem like Miku predates BRS by a little.
