Memorable Moments in Language Acquisition

1. When you aren’t sure what language a conversation was in. Oddly enough, you can recall it in both.

2. When you have a dream in your target language.

3. When you no longer remember what the language sounded like when you didn’t understand it. (Note: Learning a language because you like the way it sounds is a self-defeating goal.)

4. When you realize how terrible most translations are for Japanese movies, animes, books, etc.

5. When you inadvertently use the target language for reflex words such as, 「痛っ！」 or 「よいしょ」.

6. When you use the body language of the target language, such as waving a hand to beckon someone over.

7. When onomatopoeias actually start sounding like the sounds they’re supposed to represent. (Hint: They sound nothing like the actual sound, your brain has just been brain-washed.)

8. When you somehow knew the meaning of a word without ever actually having learned it (my favorite and most baffling moment).

All of these have happened to me. What about the others who've taken up Japanese(or any other) as a second language?

Yeah, it has all happened to me, but with English. I don't even know how I ended up knowing so much. I only learned very small and formal things in school English classes.

I don't know about you guys, but I sometimes say words in English when speaking with friends and such, because that same word in Spanish just doesn't come to my mind at that moment.

Had a dream in German once back when i could speak it (I have long sence lost that ability sence i havnt had a need to in about 7 years).

Scary thing is, when i woke up i remembered word for word what had been said, but i didnt remember learning half of those words, and apon wakeing could even back translate the conversation into english.

His posts are filled with the same idiotic glee of one who has just started learning a second language to a conversational level.

Also, I never understood why people seriously take efforts to learn all the regional accents, Kansai above all. Are people learning English to any degree taught Scottish pronounciation?

These aren't really landmarks. I do these because I've watched too much anime and I don't know Japanese, probably never will. Because I'm too lazy and stupid.
