Plus IS a mod. It's just packaged with the base game already. That said, custom is fairly out of date and a lot of the recent Plus changes are pretty good.

You can't go wrong with Omake Overhaul either, but I think that requires installing over vanilla yourself. Omake has only the one act, but it has a lot more to do and build with your character in general.

Cold is best for raw damage, if you've got a decent level of the fire/cold enchant, the cold damage from fireball will be higher than from plain ice ball.
Use bubble storm, alchemical rain, or a rod of bubble ball with dupli-cane for easy application of the wet status.
Cold + Wet damage is roughly the same as pure magic damage, but the elemental spells have higher base power, especially with the itzpalt gemstone.
I don't consider casting element scar worth the effort,

Shields are almost as good as body armor (2nd place), but you get a better defensive enchantment pool to rng from. And, at endgame you don't really need all the thousands of pv you'll be able to get. Especially since you can get 1000 from holy shield spell, and 700 just from attributes/skills. Another 30 * armor that has been enhanced, and up to an extra 40 * armor that has been heavied up.

The actual amount of pv you get from armor itself is drowned out be all the other sources.

BloodyShade's last Custom release was 1.89, after which he suddenly left due to personal problems. You could mod new stuff into Custom or Foobar. It is a pain in the ass, though, because almost all variables are global and will fuck you up. There are also a bunch of issues with updating to later versions if they ever come out, since there are a shitload of integer ids and table indices which are hard coded and put in the save game files, and if you added any that were also added in whatever you are branching from, then you need to write special backwards compat code.

Play with the normal human races first (yerles, euldrena, juere, elea) to get a feel of the game, you can incarnate a new character off the save file with the loots from it later should you deem them inadequate later (which you should).

If you can get it to decompile (see Custom G 1.90 for instructions), open start.hsp in a text editor for large files (ex: Visual Studio) and search for

then look for things in the function that compare the cdata indexed by 25 (quality level), and either the first function parameter (damage target) or 3rd function parameter (damage source), to 6 (unique quality). It might look something like

Checks for speed seem like they might use cdata index 10, 11, or 39.
5x damage and 1/5 damage being the limits should also provide a hint.

I might be wrong about this, but hopefully it should give a place to start looking, if you decide you want to go ahead with modding it.

This would be my best guess, although the exception is getting thrown by a function called CrackEncryption. Based on some googling it looks like its possible that we can get past it by updating the Dictionary.csv file correctly.

It hasn't been updated in 4 years, so I kind of doubt its getting updated again. It is open source, though, so worst case scenario we have to fix it ourselves.

Okay, I have a stupid hack that seems to let the decompiler finish and the produced start.hsp looks normal enough. I don't quite understand the function, but it seems like it brute forces a bunch of xor patterns until it finds one that seems to work. If it finds multiple it assumes there was a problem, but I'm guessing it just means that only one of the patterns it finds really will work but it can't know which one.
