Just finished Winter Nights - there were some tough parts, but overall it was an enjoyable read. Not at all suited for the VN format though (only valid adaptations I see is stage or radio play). There's way too much long winded monologues during the dialogue, and really it's more focused on the narrator character than the girl.

Art - 6/10 I like the backgrounds but the character sprite is very kind of amateurish, and very lacking in variety of expressions

Story/Characters - at it's premise it's a love story, but I'm sure many /jp/sies will find the protagonist on many levels.

Music - non-existant, but undertandable

Overall, 3 fingernails out of 10. One for the confusing as fuck intro, one for the equally confusing (and long) as fuck monologue the protagonist goes into the second night, and one more for the rage inducing ending.

But overall, it was a nice discovery. But VN wrapper itself is almost completely superfluous.

As to why Ren'Py - why not? It's a reasonably good way to package up a pygame game to Just Work on Windows and MacOS X without having to spend aeons figuring out what options to use to crosscompile libraries (as I did for when playing around with games in C/SDL) or having to buy a Mac, and carrying all the dependencies with it means I don't have to worry about whether 'python' in Fedora Core 13 uses Python 2.2 or Pyrlthon 3006.

A very short story about a boy who makes friends with a girl and the secret she keeps hidden until years later.

Story is too short to really develop anyone. A parent's divorce is the only device used to characterize Peter as a slightly emotionally troubled person seeking stability in his life. The middle of the story is time-skipped and only summarized. Art is passable, but it's a mishmash--backgrounds made by different people (some that look more painted, others with a normal CG look), sprites made by different people, and only one BGM.

It's more like a person trying out Ren'Py than a real effort.
