Today I took a Japanese test as a part of the process for acquiring citizenship in Japan. There is not very much info about the contents of this test available online in English so I wanted to share my experience here for anyone who may be interested in learning about the process of acquiring citizenship in Japan or for anyone who is considering trying to acquire citizenship but may be wondering about the language requirement.

One of the requirements for becoming a citizen in Japan is a minimum Japanese level of "equivalent to the lower levels of elementary school". This is quite vague and doesn't give a clear answer for what level you need to be, especially as written texts for second and third graders can be quite different from each other due to the number of kanji. When I was conducting interviews as part of the process, my case worker conducted a practice exam with me and when we did this practice exam he had me read from an elementary school second grade level 国語 textbook and then he asked simple questions based on the text. He said that this was the type of questions I would see on the test. He also had me practice writing hiragana and katakana as he said random characters out loud. He said that there was no kanji requirement because the majority of people who naturalize in Japan are Chinese or Korean and they can read kanji so they focus on hiragana/katakana. You should still be able to read some kanji though.

In the end the types of questions on the exam ended up being quite similar to what I was asked during the practice exam in my earlier interviews. I will give an example.

Read this passage: 空の 上で、お日さまが わらいました。「おや、はるかぜが ねぼうして いるな。竹やぶも 雪も ふきのとうも、みんな こまって いるな。」そこで、南を むいて 言いました。「おうい、はるかぜ。おきなさい。」

And then it will ask a question about the text like だれ が わらいましたか？ and you have to write the answer very simply like お日さまです

As the level is closer to a lower age group the amount of kanji is very few, as you can see from my example above. Even simple common words like 向く and 困る are written in hiragana. There are spaces which helps with readability, but ultimately reading something mostly in hiragana is kind of painful and may affect your reading speed (it did for me). I ended up purchasing the same 国語 textbook online and practiced reading aloud as I'm not used to reading anything that lacks kanji. If you have played something like Pokemon on the Game Boy or some old Famicom RPG's then you will probably be much better off than I was for reading something with mostly kana. If you're not used to that I recommend picking up the book like I did and practice reading aloud. I never realized how much kanji increases my reading speed until now.

As for the real test, there are three parts. The first part is a few sentences which are written entirely in hiragana and katakana. You have to first read it out loud to the officer who is overseeing the approval of your case (this is a different person from your case worker). Some of the words are underlined and have a space to write underneath of them. If the underlined work is written in hiragana, you must write it in katakana. If it's written in katakana, you must write it in hiragana. The second part is the reading section. It's exactly like the example above, you read a very short passage and answer 4 questions based on the events which happen in the text. It's very very similar to my example. The third part is on a separate page. There is some space to write, and you have to write about what your hobbies are. That's everything. One interesting point is that at the top of the test where you write your name, I was instructed to write my Japanese name and then to write my old name above it like furigana. I thought this was very interesting as my Japanese name is not legally my name yet.

So today I was getting really confused on the differences between the kanji for older and younger sister and decided to google my problem. Thinking nothing of it, I typed into google “imouto vs ane” and clicked on the suggested search “imouto no ane”. Naturally I did an image search in hopes of quickly seeing the two kanji laid before me, only to be met with copious amounts of hentai. I closed that browser as fast as possible, and luckily I don’t think anyone saw it. I don’t think I will ever use another google suggestion when searching for Japanese advise on the internet.

in my powered up form i stayed awake for a very long time completing a long homework very fast and catching up with some other things, but then when i finally got tired and wanted to sleep i was woken up twice, one time i had to handle an appointment given to me and next day i had to attend a group work event for one of the courses i'm attending so i wasn't able to sleep two days in a row turning me into a wreck
