MoF is pretty universally agreed upon as the worst of the main games. SA has mediocre characters and backgrounds but the spellcards are really good.

I don't like SA or MoF because of the way continues work. It makes it more difficult to go through and I have too much pride to play on easy. I don't like the bombs either.

I haven't been able to get through them once on normal and I've been playing them for about a month and a half now(though not religiously, off and on).

The only designs I dislike in MoF are Sanae's and Suwako's.

Kanako's design is awesome in my opinion.

Nitori's is great just because of how the items are supposed to make her look like a kappa.

Shizuha's and Miroriko's are some of my favorite designs. I really like the color, and the cut-out leaves and whatnot.

Music in MoF is great also.

The bomb system is alright, just took me some time to get used to.

I like MoF.

I will go ahead and proclaim that MoF is the best main touhou game in my opinion
1. the best soundtrack bar none
2. Great aesthetic (it really feels like autumn)
3. solid characters and story
4. A scoring system that is challenging and unique
5. game play if pretty even in that Kanako is harder than Sanae and the rest unlike in previous games (youmu harder than yuyuko, erin being at the same difficulty as kaguya and both of them being easier than either marisa and reimu, and remi being completely underwhelming compared to the rest of the game)

1. Matter of opinion, but I consider PCB to have the best soundtrack.

5. Personally, I think Aya is more challenging than Sanae.
6. I think the faith system is kind of bland. I understand that there are probably subtleties to it like bombing at strategic moments, but compared to PCB's border bonus and IN's master/slave system, I find it a little underwhelming.

Well, that explains a lot. All I'll say is that Remilia definitely deserves the spot as the most difficult final boss on Lunatic, followed by either Kanako or Yuyuko (Yuyuko requires more memorization to learn while Kanako has Virtue of the Wind God).

I'll just post the text that I used in another topic a few days ago. I'd like to say though, that the gameplay and scoring system plays a much bigger part for me than characters/style.


EoSD is my favorite, I like the simple scoring system, the difficulty, the cards, the characters, the music, everything is great even though it's old.

The others follow up close, with PCB and SA almost equally behind EoSD. They both have great soundtracks and both are a blast to play. SA has unique features while PCB has the border system and great pattens. So far is has my favorite extra stage(s) too.

IN and MoF come in last. MoF simply because I dislike the whole faith scoring system, honestly dying once and fucking your score is bullshit, especially since I've been bombing less (trying to capture as many cards as I can) and MoF is a bomb friendly game. It does redeem itself by having the best OST of all the Touhou games, but still the other games are better. IN is only low at my list because I simply haven't played it much. I'm sure that with time it will shoot straight to the top with the spell card select option and awesome scoring system, but for now I think not much of it.

PoFV shares the throne with EoSD, but since the games are different I try not to put them on the same list. I just love it's multiplayer, it's so addictive. StB is also a great game, but again different so I don't really compare it with the others. I don't really play fighting games so I can't rate IaMP and SWR.
I have yet to play the pre-windows games.

Well, the only problem I have with it is, of course, one death knocks 1/3 off, so the later you die the bigger the penalty.

I guess what also bothers me is how intangible it is. Borders can be used like a free hit (besides allowing collection below the POC), and IN's human/phantom gives you the option of either taking out slaves to generally make things easier (fewer bullets on screen), or targeting the master and using the slaves that destruct to clear a path. But the faith system is just about improving score.

Yeah I think the % death penalty is a bad design decision too, but still it's the only one I ever bother trying to score in since it has extremely few variables (EoSD is simpler but I don't play it much). I think the others would be much better if they had 1 or 2 score influences removed.

But I'm not all that big on scoring anyway, I just think MoF is the best designed one that way.

Other than EoSD being my favorite by far, I like all the Touhou games about the same, but I'd have to say MoF is the worst if I had to pick, just because Aya and Sanae have boring, crappy danmaku, and for some reason level 4 is the hardest part of the game except for Kanako's very last card. The scoring and bombing are also total crap.
EoSD is my favorite because Meiling and Remilia have my favorite danmaku in the series and the scoring isn't pointlessly complicated, it's just graze this shit, grab these items, kill these spell cards, maybe occasionally use bombs for bullet cancelling.
