Okay so I got sent here from /v/.

can you help a newfag out, /jp/? I've never played Touhou before but it looks pretty interesting and it seems to be pretty popular which means it's good, right? So I've got a bunch of questions...

If I were to start playing, what game should I start with? Where should I download it from? And would it be in English? More questions later, perhaps, if I can think of anymore...

Start with either Imperishable Night or Perfect Cherry Blossom.

Embodiment of Scarlet Devil

>> No.3066596

Start from touhou 06+
http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/Touhou_Wiki
Google the names and download the games, simple as that.
Get the english patches from here if there's not available on the .rar or whatever:http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/English_patch

>> No.3066597

downlad touhou games in /rs/ and you have to download translation patch (i downloaded them in gensokyo.org)
and begin with Perfect Cherry blossom

>> No.3066599

I would stay start with Youyoumu ~ Perfect Cherry Blossom, or perhaps Koumakyou ~ Embodiment of Scarlet Devil rather than a newer game because it will let you appreciate the series' evolution progressively=. That said, Youyoumu is a huge step up in from Koumakyou in terms of mechanics/visuals and overall quality of the patterns and pacing as I see it, so maybe starting with Koumakyou is best if you intend to play all of them.
Koumakyou is a classic with excellent music.

Yes, there is English patches available for most, check the Wiki. http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/Imperishable_Night

Like >>3066587 aid IN or PCB are good starters.
Just search Touhou on some torrent tracker and you should find them.

>> No.3066615

PCB first, then either IN if you want it a bit easier, or EoSD a bit harder. After one, play the other, then go in order past PoFV.

- For whatever version you download, delete/rename score.dat so that you are playing afresh, and make sure the gameplay settings are _defaults_ (read: initial lives and no slow mode or any cheating stuff)
- Start with 6, 7, or 8. They're pretty good for beginners, 8 for easiest and 6 for simplicity, 7 for in between.
- No easy mode. If you do, don't even bring it up.

Few tips.

Bomb if you think you'te going to die.
Bombs are basically extra lives, though it's best to save them for later stages (Anything Stage 4 and up for me)

Don't dodge bullets, instead you should find paths.
Don't try looking at bullets to dodge, look for the empty spots in the patterns and where new empty spots are going to be. Trying to see where every bullet is going will kill you.

Never stay at the bottom of the screen long.
Learn to dodge in 4 directions. Don't think staying at the bottom will help you out because you have a longer reaction time. It won't.

Don't be afraid to push through a line of bullets.
Learn your hitbox. Get a feel for how tight it is. You can dodge quite a few patterns by pushing through a tight line of bullets, making the kill quicker.

Learn to use Marisa.
I know you have to aim and all that, but a lot of the times she will make bosses faster, which is a good thing if you are just trying to beat the game or get 1cc.

But do note she's only worth it on EoSD. SakuyaA on PCB, Border Team on IN, ReimuA on MoF and SA are (arguably) the most "user-friendly" choices.

>Never stay at the bottom of the screen long.
You should generally stand perhaps one, two fingers up the screen, too much up and lack of reaction time does hurt. Of course this is barring trick cards like Stradivarius (where you need to go near point blank for much easier dodging)

I personally recommend either MoF or PCB as your first game, play them until you get a good hang on the game, especially on judging when to bomb. After you play a stage several times, you know where you must bomb and where you can handle, and both PCB (if using SakuyaA) and MoF are very generous with bombs.

Also, watch replays. A number of cards become much easier once you learn how to take them on, and replays do precisely that. Don't use highscorers' replays though, those do weird crap to maximize graze. Choose a lower scored replay.

Don't forget the PC-98 games. Lotus Land Story may be a pretty good one for beginners, since it's the easiest to 1CC in the series.

There is a bit of truth to the whole thought of "if a lot of people like it, it must be good" because why would people like something shitty? But I understand the whole fact of not everyone having the same likes and dislikes, but I still find it silly that you all ostracize others who want to try something because it is popular.

On to the point (addressing the OP), just download all of them and start with Perfect Cherry Blossom, because It is the easiest, and once you get good at that, you should go on to others, preferably play the prequel to that, Embodiment of Scarlet Devil from there, and then move on.

If you like mandala, you like touhou.

Dumb fucks, how is PCB the easiest? I cannot believe this every time i see it. IN has the easiest easy and the easiest normal. OP start with EoSD or HRtP, so you won't be a faggot like these half-assed 'gamers'.
