Nazeka is an in-browser dictionary with hover-over functionality. Textractor culls text directly from VNs. Using both together, you can automatically copy text to Nazeka, hover over any terms or kanji you don't recognize, and get readings + definitions, voice pronunciations, and so on. It's really great. Honestly, just learn your kana + some basic grammar rules, and jump straight into a VN. It can be slow, but it's so much more enjoyable than fucking Anki 24/7.

same deal, yomichan + textractor. i have about 1k kanji under my belt from kanji study and a few thousand words that utilize those kanji. i try to limit looking up words as much as possible because doing it too much makes it hard for anything to stick at all. less really is more (for me anyway). most of the time i just find myself using it to doublecheck if i got a reading correct, and not even look at the definition. words with kanji that i'm familiar with are very easy to guess the meaning and reading, and are easy to pick up in general. if a word has more than one unfamiliar kanji i ignore it completely, if it has only one unfamiliar kanji and i've seen this word several times before i'll check it out, look up the kanji and make a quick mnemonic on the fly so i can recognize it when i see it next time. i'm more interested in the story than i am about hard-committing vocab/kanji to memory so i'm kinda playing a long game. i've got a good setup for mining but i have some other goals that i'm trying to accomplish before i go too hard on that.
i think it's important to know when a sentence (or word for that matter) is beyond your level, then read it best you can and move on. just getting a vague imprint of those patterns in your head is enough to help them click in the future. it also helps with making more ground in the vn which helps with motivation. these things are extremely padded out when it comes to text and dialogue, it's okay to let some things go if they don't seem important.

Thank you for providing insight into your process. I can imagine the extra kanji really does help speed things along. Wonder if it's worth doing something small like 11-12 kanji from KKLC a day as a supplement while reading my VN, or if that will mostly just add to the workload. I couldn't help but go hard with RTK/Core back in the day. I'm the kind of learner who spends several minutes on sentences and words to get a detailed and understanding of their subtleties, which is a big fence for progress sometimes. So, it ends up taking forever. That's why I'm still in my prologue; even when I can understand a sentence reasonably well, I feel compelled to dig further.

try to get used to ambiguity. it's okay to skip some things, japanese isn't going anywhere. if you're worried you won't see that word or grammar point again for a while than it probably isn't worth learning in the first place. just take a quick mental note of it and dig in a little deeper every time it comes up again. depending how far in you are i'd say 10 kanji a day is fine and very manageable. I plan on stopping all isolated kanji study after 1250 (just an arbitrary milestone) or slowing down to something like 5 a day so it's just a quick deal that doesn't take much time or mental energy. i found that if i know too many kanji without the vocab to cement them, they start slipping and it also opens up too many words that i want to look up, because again i try to keep that minimal. isolated kanji study might not have even been a great way to do it. i've had plenty of success from just mining a vocab word with new kanji, looking up the kanji, making a quick mnemonic and acquiring it alongside the vocab which is what i'll be doing after i hit 1250.

i'm learning so much it's crazy i can't believe how easy my university material actually was it was full of weird keywords and mathimatical formulas making references to stuff i never heard about but just by looking everything up and reading everything utilizing the entirety of my brain to making deductions and conclusions i recieve such a deep understanding of everything said or attempted to have been said that i can even learn from the shittiest learning material, i think people with lower iqs would struggle with this but in my current state i can work off a lecture in a few minutes and i'm completely focused on the homework for which we have had a couple weeks of time aiming to do learn the material AND do it in 1 day i doubt there is another human being capable of such a feet

Top entertainment genre in Japan.

Author, 東野圭吾: very talented, many novels, one of the most popular in Japan. One listed are highly readable, but some of his novels like 白夜行 have a lot of hard dialectal speech.

夜明けの街で also is a romance novel, movie-adapted. One of my first novels and I was quite able to keep up with it.

容疑者Xの献身 few characters, easy to follow. mathematics and logical discussions.

秘密 — psychologically very interesting, heated conflict.

Author, 湊かなえ: also one of the most popular authors. These first two novels are split into about 6 short story length chapters, with different narrators providing their interpretation of events in pseudo-monologue form. it will remind you of the story several times so its easier to keep track of the basic plot.
