Oh, hi, /touhou/, I see we got a number of visual novels in english now. I see on my Start Menu:

Tsukihime (non voiced)
Wind a breath of heart
Narcisu
Planetarian
Clannad (Voiced using PS2 source)
Utawarerumono (Voiced using PS2 source)
Fate/stay night (Fate and UBW routes voiced using PS2 source)
Ever 17

There's also Crescendo... that some people say it's also a visual novel but I guess it's more a hgame at heart.

Am I missing something? Perhaps a Tsukihime voice patch (now that would be something...)? I think Kanon had a partial translation somewhere (but it didn't actually finish any route so I dunno).

Does Melty Blood count as a Visual Novel or is that just FIGHTAN? Also, Gadget Trial.

Being a visual novel doesn't mean it isn't an h-game. Those are different types of classification.

And isn't Utawarerumono a SRPG?

Also, torrent.

The correct term used by the Japanese themselves is "eroge" (shortened vocalization of 'erotic game'). H game is also an acceptable alternative.

Visual Novel is a more neutral term made up by Westerners.

Both real eroge and eroe without the ero (VN's without sex scenes) are essentially the same -- same themes, same plots, same approach, same goals.

Of the games listed by the OP, only Tsukihime can be said to be "great", but that's only because of the legendary fandom mystique which surrounds it -- as a game, the TypeMoon stuff budget-art, convoluted storylines that don't make much sense and lack-luster H scenes. The mystque comes from the fact that TypeMoon started off as a doujin circle that made it big.

All the other ones listed are mediocre, short, or both. A harsh reality of the American VN translation market is that only budget crap gets purchased and translated. If you want to play the best in the media, you have to use machine translations or learn Japanese. Somethign I strongly suggests or else you will never really know awesome the best of the industry is really like.

Yume Miru Kusuri

Those are the only ones I can name off the top of my head that you should read. If you like short novels you can try Red Shift too.

AHAHAHA NO, Tsukihime, Clannad, FSN and Ever17 are considered among the best in Japan no matter what you think.
I don't know what you mean by "great", probably lots of ero with high quality CGs, but those one are among the most liked and worthy of any top10 even for someone who played a fuckload lots of eroge.
Also Utawarerumono, Kana and Planetarian are very well liked as well.

You have got to be joking me. Clannad alone is highly considered as one of the greatest visual novels to this date. Don't get me wrong, Tsukihime is good, but you have either not played any of the novels in OP's list or you're talking shit out of your mouth.

Most of this is pure faggotry, but

>>A harsh reality of the American VN translation market is that only budget crap gets purchased and translated.

is true. 9 out of 10 of the translated visual novels out there are fan works, simply because between licensing costs and the actual time involved it's more economic to translate a simple stupid porn game that doesn't have to sell much to turn a profit than to do something like F/SN or Clannad, which between the costs and the fact that there's no proven market for VNs that are more than cheap wank material would be a HUGE risk.

>> No.305665

There is no market for VNs outside Japan. Those little few consumers are typically net savvy and smart enough to claim their unlimited free supply.

>> No.305733

>>305665
This is all too true. If I recall correctly from one of Peter Payne's convention panels, 3000 units is the target for their game sales. That's the point at which they've returned enough to warrant the project.

So lets assume all 3000 copies are sold directly through J-List/JAST USA for 50 USD. That's a total revenue of 150,000 USD. To turn a 5% profit, that leaves the budget for the game at 142,185 USD. A 20% profit leaves the budget at 125,000. And that money needs to cover licensing fees, translators, programmers, package design, advertising, printing, etc. So it's no wonder that only shit with the lowest possible licensing fees will get published here. It just wouldn't be economical to license Little Busters, or To Heart 2, or anything like that.

>> No.306365

To summarize most of the content of this thread:

Internet. Serious business.
Learn moonrunes to play eroge, faggot.
Amerikkka LOL.

Also, Ace Attorney is a visual novel, I think. While it definitely doesn't PLAY like one, it's definitely listed somewhere.

There's no time travel, and you're playing the cast from Chrono Cross. It's enjoyable, but every route is like a completely different plot and they don't fit into any big picture.
I personally liked it better than Chrono Cross itself. There are even a few almost-ecchi references about Kid.

Tsukihime is better than Fate/Stay Night, especially if you only consider the Far Side routes.

>> No.307672

>>307645
Tsukihime is honestly not that amazing, the only real great part is Hisui's route but even then you spent most of the route in a bed.
FSN is a little bland and the "slice of life" portions are pretty boring but it's pretty good, I like them both but I do find them overrated.

>> No.307735

>>306428
Um, no. Of the over 40 playable characters of Chrono Cross, the only two who appear are Kid and Lynx. Serge and Magil are completely different characters, though they share the same name as their alterego counterparts.

>>305050
No. Visual Novels (commonly abbreviated as NVL in Japan) are games where the text display field takes up most of the screen, whereas Adventure games (ADV) are games where the text field is only displayed in the lower portion of the screen.

>> No.308299

Yopi is the reason why you play that game.

CLANNAD sucks. Not as bad as many other games, so it's really just mediocre. It's mediocre crap from a major publisher so it has more of mainstream appeal in the Japanese gamers, but it can't in a million years to be considered to be within the top 5 or even the top 10 of most real eroge players' libraries. The hard truth remains: If you want epic an brick-shitting, you need to learn how to like ATLAS translations.

>> No.308401

>>308299
You are the shit and Yoppi's route is really overrated, only good for the shock factor.
Let me see, you probably are a retard who think that School Days is a masterpiece because it's "DARK" and has lot of sex scenes, right? Retard.

Yopi's route owns because she's incredibly hot and causes drama. School Days is good ebcause it has lots of sex THAT IMPPACTS THE STORY, many different endings and routes, and lots of drama. You're probably a faggot from hongfire who gets off to those horrible loli games. Sexy, healthy grils with large breasts are probably like the anti-christ to you.

>> No.310166

>>305073
I didn't think I'll ever say this but Yume Miru Kusuri has way to much H-scenes.
It's fucking annoying to have the plot interrupted every 20 minutes by a little slut who wants it up the ass in order to get to some fairyland or shit, like I hadn't got enough fap material on my PC.

>> No.310234

>>309903
No, Yoppi's route isn't bad but it's short and it doesn't have the great mix of character development, drama and comedy that routes like Hime or Kinu have.
School Days has really shitty character dynamics and is really badly written overall. It's playable in a LOOK AT THE TRAINWRECK kind of way but nobody should take it seriously, not only that but that faggot Makoto makes the game totally unfappable.
I like my girl healthy too but you sound like the type of retard who think any eroges that don't have a sex scene every 5 minutes, a main character who is a rapist and a ZOMG DARK storyline is a failure, you should understand some people want something different from their eroge/galge so stop trying to impose your ideas on others.
