I was dissatisfied with all the other Touhou tarot decks out there.

The one that is widely available online does not do a very good job of matching cards with characters in a manner that preserves the occult meaning. The one that was commercially available was a bit better, but it sold out quickly.

So, I decided to make my own deck.

I borrowed Rider-Waite-Smith deck proportions and mostly used beautiful ZUNart for the pictorial portion of each. Characters were matched to cards in accordance with the popular 1911 interpretations, though I did not preserve much of the original pictorial symbolism. Each Touhou character comes preloaded with a lot of context, and I tried to take full advantage of that.

I chose a black and gray backing with vertical and horizontal symmetry. A black border with beveled corners was left around each in order to better disguise my horrendous cutting. The face and backing were printed separately on glossy photo paper. The sides were pasted together with white glue before the cards were cut to size.

The finished product exceeded my expectations. Somehow, the deck looks a thousand times better on paper than it did on my screen. The shit tier resolution of ZUNart from the Touhou wiki is almost endearing. The cards are nice and heavy, yet hold together well. Their only disadvantage is the occasional spot of glue and the fact that glossy photo paper has a tendency to be a bit sticky.

The deck itself reflects both the nature of Gensokyo as I understand it and my own occasionally very sick sense of humor. The backing works well both with my household decor and and my penchant for shades, the darker the better.

Though I didn't take this too seriously when I started, I actually like the result. Enjoy!

I have the doujin one by the circle U235.

Only the major arcana, though, shame Remi and Flan had BOTH single cards and another one that featured both of them together.

It's popular to portray Sanae in this position, but we know that Reimu is the real self-proclaimed authority around those parts.

I thought long and hard about this one, and settled on RemiXSakuya. I wanted to depart from the conventional meaning of the card anyway, and stacking several different kinds of love: master-servant, 'child'-caretaker, etc. seemed like a fine thing to do.

Romantic love is overrated.

lol

Satori, with her 'pets', clairvoyance and all seemed like a more natural choice. We're talking about the power of the feminine with that card, and I wanted to spin it a bit darker than it's usually made out.

This card took five fucking hours of solid, uninterrupted contemplation to find anything suitable for. The frog-snake duality, stubborn personality and general thickheadedness of this very good girl eventually won me over.

Manipulation of fate and all that jazz is her province. I have a total of two cards with Remilia on them, but I judged that to be acceptable given what I wanted to do with the meanings.

This choice is slightly amusing to the casual eye, but is deeply disturbing if you dig into the meaning of the card. Aforementioned sick sense of humor really shines here, at least for those who care to look just a little bit beneath the surface.

I have a total of four cards in this deck that do not use ZUNart. This is one of them. It was painfully hard to find a good Peaches for this sort of a portrayal.

It was also painfully hard to to choose the character for the card, given that its more interesting meanings go deeper than than the Abrahamic Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny, and quickly get very confusing. However, a celestial who seemingly has nothing better to do than to impel all of Gensokyo to action seems fitting here.

I couldn't resist a final bit of levity with this card, especially given my skepticism regarding the supposition of there being an ultimate end or harmony to anything. Not content with the original concept of the card, I wanted to inject the idea that behind every apparent harmony there inevitably lies a giant DERP.
