Anyone who says you can't learn another language on your own is a fucking moron of epic proportions, don't listen to them, the likelihood is they have the buyer's remorse and are just trying to justify spending $2000+ on classes.

What OP is completely disregarding is the fact that English is one of the easiest language to learn, while Asian languages are hard as fuck to learn.

Sure, you can learn English easily by watching TV and playing video games. I learned English that way and was perfectly bilingual when I reached the age of ten, but Japanese doesn't work that way.

Anyone can teach themselves anything. A friend of mine did a bsc in physics and basically turned up to 0 lectures throughout the entire 3 years. Yet he always handed his essays in on time and got a 2:1 at the end of it.

In my case, I did a year-long homestay in high school, did my junior year abroad in Japan, and am currently here doing research before entering grad school. I did study in between, but most of my progress was made while in Japan, especially during the first and second years.
