most words are not concrete things but abstract concepts that need more context to express their full meaning

when we look at an isolated word that we already know, we already have a general idea of it based on all the usages we've seen

sentence cards give you a chance to fix at least one of the meanings but since we're supposed to get sentences where there's only one unknown word you'll repeat words in many scenarios giving you the chance to capture the word fully.

they also put less strain on you because you infer the meaning from the sentence instead of you just memorizing meanings like it's a list. when you see a sentence card you think in the language. you get a complete thought so you can just feel the sentence without translating

with vocab cards what you do is a translation in your head. you have nothing to grab on to unless it's a word like "cat" or something
and this translation is obviously not satisfactory because it's only an approximation

if you already knew the word you would catch some usage case from your head but since most of us use anki to learn words from scratch, it doesn't work

How do I switch from one vocab learning tool to another after using it for a long time? Do I have to start again from scratch?
I'm asking because I want to switch from Memrise to something else, but after almost a year of using it I've racked up almost 600 words memorized and I absolutely don't want to start from scratch again on something like Anki. I really should have just used Anki from the start but I liked the simplicity of Memrise, but now the review system is too basic for what I need. Pic-related are the 3 decks I've been using, starting roughly 4 years ago; I'm only interested in learning how to read, have no plans to ever go to Japan, all I ever do in japanese is Anki and reading native material.
I started with the Kanjidamage, then when I was done I added the Core2K deck (but with the example sentence on front), then after I was done I added my Mining Deck, in which I collected a little over 15k vocabs and expressions (standard yomichan setup) from reading manga/games/VNs, but I've only studied 35% so far.

I agree. I started to use content frequently after 1 year of studying and I had close to 0 problems with it. Once we understand the basics, we kinda get at the very long middle stage where the only difference is how much we need to translate. From several words per sentence down to 1, down to 1 in several sentences and until we can understand/guess that naturally due to a high amount of context.

It's more a guess, but actually I think Japanese uses a higher amount of words on a regular basis. Very often words have katakana-analogue and happily we already know most of these. Some verbs split into transitive/intransitive versions and there is a huge amount of compounds of several actions to add more nuances. Add onomatopoeia and several similar things, as result even 15k-30k frequency range is actively used in novels, which rarely happens in other languages.

The time I'm willing/able to dedicate to focused studying is roughly 40 minutes a day (usually lunch break at work), so I don't often have the leeway to add new cards on top of the reviews I have to do for the 3 decks.
I don't think I have much passive vocabulary learnt outside of Anki, I'm definitely not reading native material as often as I should.

Yeah, totally agree. I was like terrified of actually trying to enjoy content in Japanese, I always felt like I needed to get to X level before I could even try. I literally spent like... years just going through textbooks, studying for tests, and doing anki reps, but never actually using my Japanese. It was kinda scary, and honestly still can be some times. I didn't try reading my first manga until I was like 4 years in, but starting is by far the hardest part. Like any skill it takes practice. Like you said, there will always be stuff you don't know, and you will always be discovering new things. Yeah, making anki cards for new words is a great way to remember them, but you don't have to make one for literally every single individual word. Nowadays if I can figure stuff out from context, or if I hear a word that is new but I can understand immediately, I won't bother making a card, only really if I don't know or it peaks my interest. Over time, the different ways they can be used will be aquired, similar to how we learned our native languages. Definitely don't get stuck on the "I'm only X% of the way to being good enough" mentality.

Everyone says that if you reach a certain level of proficiency, you'll be able to learn new words just from context. My problem is that in this seems to be true for almost every language except Japanese.

I've reached N1 and I'm still regularly encountering new words while reading. Most of the time I can easily guess what the word means by virtue of the context and the characters in it, but that won't let me guess how it's pronounced. I can guess how it is supposed to be pronounced, but then I might misguess. If I see a word often enough and misguess it every time, I might internalize a wrong reading which is going to be difficult to unlearn.

The result is that the sheer majority of my dictionary lookups are not "I wonder what this word means" but rather "I already know what it means but I want to know how to read it". And even after having looked up a word in the dictionary, I'll either have to create an Anki card for it, or I'm doomed to look it up another three-ish times in the dictionary when I encounter it again because "I vaguely feel like this word is supposed to be read like <...> but I'm not entirely sure. What if I'm wrong and am starting to internalize a wrong reading? I should check..."

And despite high caution against internalizing wrong readings, I still find myself sometimes proven wrong "Wait? <Word> is read as <thing>? This whole time I thought it was supposed to be <other thing>!"

Japanese feels like one of the very few languages where casually reading more content can make your language level worse instead of better.

damn dude that's rough, honestly i'd have given up personally if i still had to do that shit. as for my reading it depends on the material. if it's a manga on the easier side i can go half a volume without looking anything up. for something that has a lot of text per page it could be 3-4 words per chapter if i had to guess and even that feels too tedious.

i mostly just watch anime though and in an average episode i have to look up like 5 words maybe? actually i have no idea if that's accurate tbqh ive never thought about it.

i think you should try to do at least 2 hours per day. you dont want to be 8 years in with a vocabulary of 10k words still having to look shit up, that'd be extremely depressing i feel like.

Have a look at "Japanese From Zero! 1" which teaches hiragana gradually, i. e. each chapter introduces a fixed set of hiragana and replaces the romaji letters with those hiragana, the rest stays in romaji. Book 2 is doing the same but for katakana. The book is very easy to understand, follows a slow pace, and was written for people of all ages studying by themselves. You can find it on Amazon or bookdepository.

Hey guys, For a number of years I've been using a homemade software to count word occurrences in Japanese drama so that I can focus on learning the most useful words and I'm slowly moving this online.

Anyway for fun I have counted all Kanji occurrences and made a JLPT style list based on how often a kanji appear. I also compared the position of the Kanji with the assumed jōyō position and JLPT position. For the JLPT I used the list that's around on the web and which is definitively not to be trusted (分, 誰 are supposedly not in the JLPT for example!).

This list might be quite useful for people who want to focus on spoken Japanese, since the list you find around are usually built on written Japanese (most used words in newspaper or wikipedia), whereas here it's a transcription of the Japanese spoken in dramas, which is in my opinion fairly close to "real" Japanese, although hopefully you will not "殺" as often as they do in drama !

Also, an interesting stat to gather given you're using JP Subbers, which likely has 1450 drama series (or ~18,000 individual shows) for each Kanji would be how many separate subtitle files a kanji appeared in at least once. A kanji that's very frequent but doesn't appear in many subs likely is a lead character's name meaning it's not as important to learn as the frequency would suggest.

What I did in my Japanese novel text scan for kanji frequency is use a "Tethered Sort" where I had a column for frequency rank and source rank. The Tethered Rank would be the Frequency Rank unless the source rank was lower than 500 levels than the frequency rank (meaning it was not appearing in multiple sources as the frequency would suggest), then the Tethered Rank would be the Source Rank for that kanji. This doesn't become a big deal till you're in the JPDT 3 or higher range.

I wanted to make this post to warn others not to fall into the community trap. These days there are a million different discord channels and other online communities full of people who are learning Japanese. At first it seems like a good idea to join a lot of these communities because you can meet other people who are also studying Japanese and maybe they might know some helpful resources or have study tips. That's fine and all, but I want to make the argument of why these communities should be avoided. TLDR at the bottom.

1) Every moment that you spend posting or lurking in these communities is time that you could have spent studying.

Learning Japanese isn't hard, but it takes a lot of time to accomplish it. The more time you spend with Japanese the sooner you will become fluent. The more time you spend posting on discord the less time you are spending with Japanese. The same applies for watching YouTube videos about learning Japanese or reading a textbook. You need to spend time using the actual language and that usually means watching TV, reading books, listening to podcasts etc.

2) foreigners make mistakes

I have heard of language learning described as taking an origami and unfolding it, and then trying to make a completely different origami out of the same sheet of paper. The folds from the original origami interfere with folding the new origami. On the topic of language, those folds are the rules of your native language getting in the way and interfering with your understanding of the rules of your target language. It doesn't matter how long you have been studying, you will make mistakes from time to time and the types of mistakes you make are dependent on your native language. You might say something 95% correct but a native speaker can easily see from the way you wrote something that it was written by a foreigner. If you participate in online communities where you speak Japanese or message in Japanese with other foreign learners then you will be exposed to more of these mistakes and it will interfere with learning the proper rules. It is better to expose yourself to solely native Japanese if you can.

Something which I find to be interesting is that many students come to Japan every year to study at Japanese language schools and often times the students are forbidden from using their native language in the classroom and everything must be done in Japanese. What this often leads to is the students discussing among themselves in Japanese, but it is a strange form of Japanese that you would never hear from a native speaker. It is Japanese which is created from the act of trying to speak Japanese using the rules of your native language because you do not yet understand the rules of the Japanese language. It might be understandable to your classmates who understand your native language but a random Japanese person probably won't understand what you're trying to say. Or it might be comprehensible to Japanese people but still be far from correct. I have heard that there is a manga about this type of situation but I have never read it myself.

Joining a discord to talk with other learners in Japanese will accomplish exactly the same type of situation and it is something you should be weary of.

I believe that the YouTuber Matt vs Japan of the MIA method is the originator of the origami analogy. I'm not trying to steal anyone's idea so I just wanted to credit him. I don't watch his videos so if I'm mistaken and he is not the one who discussed that concept then I am sorry.

3) resource hell and learning method debates.

There are often trends in the language learning community of what is the best method to learn [language]. The truth is that the best method is whichever one you stick to. You will hit points where you fee like your stuck or not making much progress. At these points it may be tempting to ask friends online for advice. I have seen cases of learners never getting past the beginner stage because they keep resource hopping. Just stick to whatever works for you. There's also silly debates in the community like whether or not you should study pitch accent, or what is the best way to learn kanji. The truth is that these don't really matter so much. You can just ignore all of these debates. Participating in these debates also brings as back to my first point. Ignore [textbook series]/MIA/AJATT/whatever method you found on YouTube from a polyglot. Just do whatever works for you and try to use the language as much as possible.its important not to constantly change your study method because in the long run you need this to become a routine.

In the past I would do normal amounts (30 new cards a day) and I would lose motivation quick because it was just a chore. this is what i used. this and some shitty podcast were my gotos while i was working. what's nice is the stories are made for kids and are short, so if one story isn't really clicking it'll only be a couple minutes til the next one. i felt that the animal ones were the easiest. got a pretty good comprehension rate on these somewhere around 5-6 months of learning japanese. if i'm being honest actually i should add that i listened to the doubutsu folder dozens of times over weeks and looked up words here and there, then when i switched to the other folders i had a much higher comprehension rate than i did when i started. i didn't really learn a whole lot of vocab from these but they helped with listening a lot. idk this is all kinda roundabout guesswork on what happened, it wasn't planned at all i needed something to listen to that wasn't white noise (though it kinda was at first) and this was kinda all i had plus a podcast that honestly never stopped being white noise. i painstakingly downloaded these one by one off a douwa website that has transcriptions of each story but i only read like two of them.

i weep at the beauty of cards with vocab + sentence on the front as i read this german book and make some cards. I can get the same sentence and make a card for each word in it. it doesn't need to be i+1
