I turned, made as if to walk away. If she wasn’t going to say anything, there was no point to this. But even as I looked away from her, out the corner of my eye, I saw her mouth open. I had an instant to feel pleased with myself. I had bluffed her into talking.

Then I heard what she said. Just one word, but her voice had that throaty-girl sound to it, just deep enough to give the word some impact.

“Fuck,” she said.

That stopped me. I turned back to her.

“Huh?” I said.

“Fuck,” said Mokou. “As in, let’s fuck.”

My eyes opened wide. My mouth worked up and down a few times before I could force any speech out.

“Uuuhhh,” I said. “Um. Sorry to break it to you, but I’ve got a policy of not sleeping with any fire gods I haven’t known for at least twelve minutes. The whole friends with benefits thing just doesn’t do it for me.”

“Didn’t say shit about friends,” said Mokou. “Just let me stick my tongue up your cunt.”

Now was my turn to be silent. Of all the possible ways I expected Mokou to react to me, aggressive sexual advances wasn’t high on the list. I moved away from the riverbank, slowly stepping backwards. Just like retreating from a rabid dog, hoping it won’t pounce.

Mokou moved forward as I moved back. She sloshed up to the bank, stepped barefoot onto the mud and grass. I expected her pants to be soaking wet, but they seemed only damp as more steam puffed out from them. Her clothes would be totally dry in a few seconds. Already, the air around us began to cool and clear.

“Don’t be shy,” she said. “It’ll be clit-licking good.”

“I have to go now,” I said. “But I sure hope someone helps you with all that sexual tension. Have a nice day.”

I turned from her again, this time meaning to walk away.

“Hmph,” said Mokou. “If you’re gonna be a fucking prude about it, then I’ll just rape your ass.”
