Assuming the majority of /jp/ is made of up NEETs, has anybody here ever considered making your own games or anything? Most of us just sit on our asses all day anyway, why not be productive?

You all saw how much popularity and attention Katawa Shoujo got with just their demo release. All that is is a collaborative project made by a bunch of faggots just like us. Not to mention Touhou. That's just one guy who does everything, as I'm sure you know.

You don't even need a college education in the field to learn how to do this kind of shit. People go to college for the credibility. You don't need credibility if you're self employed, and you won't have to spend the fuckton of money you'd spend on somebody teaching you something when you could just learn it yourself.

Basically anytime somebody here tries to commit time and effort to something and attempt to share it, it gets attacked for one reason or another.

Even for something as banal as a longer-than avverage opener for a thread or a half-way decently developed argument or thought in any discussion will get a "cool story bro" or "fascinating" macro image guaranteed, at least during daylight hours.

Stuff like the Gensokyo Man chose-your-own adventure story threads are another example. A large part of the problem is that posters in 4chan don't know how to consolidate threads; they create new threads whenever they fancy.

I think there's a problem in the way a lot of people think when it comes to making a project. Most ideas that I've seen suggested are people emulating what's already been done, for example making a dating sim with a twist of having personified viruses(virusii?) and the super robot wars idea already suggested here.

I think this is rather harmful. For a real collaboration project between several individuals, I think it would be best to adopt a new style that forms to this instead of copying what's already been done. I'll use the example of a visual novel, most people see it as centering on one main character and going into routes based on choices. This will cause a lot of conflict when you have more than a couple people writing this, as several problems such as writing styles or incongruity may crop up.

An idea for a project that may work instead is work out the basis of the story then give everyone their own character and have them tell the story through that character. At the beginning, the player selects a character from the roster and then they proceed to view the story through their eyes. In this instance, different writing styles would lend themselves to having more diverse characters and different ways of viewing the story.

Sadly, this man speaks the truth.

This is the last time I'm going to place my faith in you /jp/. If this gathering fails to bear fruit, I'll never post in another one of these threads again. I kid you not when I say group projects never work on 4chan (KS being the only exception). Personally, I believe these threads would serve a better purpose if we were to forgo the group project thing and agree to work separately on our own projects. Original content threads, such as this, could be used to swap information, ideals, and advice. Kinda like this >>2902347. Well, that's my two cents on this thread.

I've actually been working off and on (well, very, very off I should say) on my own game for a while now. Progress is very slow as you can see from the attached image. This is just a test to show collision detection. I was also playing around with bullet velocities, which is why the shot is at such a strange angle in relation to the currently identically sprited ship. I dunno when or if I'll ever finish it, considering how much work I ever put into it at once, the fact that it's my first time doing this sort of thing, my inability to sprite worth shit, and the fact that I've no clue how to make sound effects. Thankfully, music is already taken care of for me.

It's very obviously a Touhou clone. I've a couple of interesting ideas I'm working out on how to set it apart from its obvious inspiration, the two biggest being cast and bomb mechanics. If I ever get to a point where I need to get some testers, I'll probably be coming here for help.

Well very obviously. But making it a good game isn't something I can plan, it's only something I can do once I have it in front of me so I can identify where I went wrong and what needs fixing. How to make the game stand on its own as a shmup can be planned in advance and, very likely, ought to be since changing the code to adopt new mechanics once it's mostly finished would be terribly, terribly annoying.

>>I think there's a problem in the way a lot of people think when it comes to making a project. Most ideas that I've seen suggested are people emulating what's already been done

I see nothing wrong with that. That's sort of the heart and soul of doujin/indie games anyways. It worked for say, Touhou and Rosenkreuzstilette. Those games offer nothing new gameplay-wise, but they're still wonderful; The people making them are hardcore game otaku who know what works in these types of games and what doesn't. For example, Japanese ZUN is an STG_Expert (over 500 STGs played).

Actually, I'd say that western indie game creators don't play enough games. So maybe the problem is that we're trying to emulate the wrong things. Please don't use Touhou as your inspiration for a STG; go load up MAME and learn from the many incredible arcade STGs.

Anyways, I'll never start my game until I'm happy with my art/sprite skills. I imagine that this will take another few years. But I am a perfectionist at heart, and I won't be satisfied until I can make an original Alucard-level walking animation for my loli main character.

I think that the real heart of independent designers is creativity. They aren't bound by the trappings of an industry where profit means success, but have free reign to pursue experimental ideas. Although they may flop, like so many other games that build ontop of the foundations laid by others, the difference is that they'll have tried to be something else and that in itself can lead to a greater idea. I'm not saying that making a megaman-style platformer is bad, but that kind of thinking can lead to a person being trapped in only repeating what's already been done many times over.

"If you are wondering who that grouchy old man is, he is my Papa."
"Papa and I live in this small house here on Settlement 69."
"Papa used to be a Guardog."
"Now, Papa fries lizard."
"Not only fried Lizard, Papa also fry other small animals."
"And sometimes Papa even fry larger ones... but Papa cuts them to tiny pieces."
"After frying and putting them on sticks I sell them in the morning while Papa watches over the store."
"In the afternoon, we switch places and Papa goes out while I watch over the store."
"Better get my face washed before Papa gets angry again..."

>This one is written by a very good english speaker
"so this is my life.
papa and I live together in a small house in settlement 69.
way back when, papa worked as a Guardog in the army, until he got fired for chewing a man's face off.
Now he sells fried lizards to fat tourists.
well, not just lizards, anything he can find really. The rumor around town is he even fries up homeless people on occassion too. I help out with cooking in the back during the lunch crowd, and then papa leaves the store to me and goes out and does who knows what."

Sure, there are few conflicts with original story but that can be edited. I will give people who helped me make this VN proper credit.

Also, I have big plans for this... after VN is finish... I will see if someone is willing to produce an animation based on this and profit will be equally divided to people who helped me make this... Still farfetched dream I know but who knows... just maybe...

A while back I got a great idea for a Touhou-Fallout game. Tons of bullets like in Touhou but the view, movement, etc from Fallout and dodging would primarily be done by stat checks. Projectiles wouldn't be instant like in Fallout, but would move at the same time the characters did.

However I'm a lazy son of a bitch, plus I'm using SDL without actually knowing much about graphical functions, game design, etc. When I'm actually working on it progress is slow, and I'm usually not working on it. I think the ~30 FPS while drawing a bunch of tiles is a great example of me fucking up somewhere.

A friend of mine and I have been working on a VN project for 2 years now.
I do the writing, he does the art.

It's coming along at a good pace but recently he hit his head and needed stitches. Wish him well, he's a fantastic artist and you'll be amazed at what he can do.

eos-project.us is the unbuilt domain name, i'm in the midst of getting it up and running. anyway, expect an action-packed VN with animated parts and scripting involving giant robots and shit in about a year or so.

I don't see why you can't just continue using this thread in ghost mode.

Other than the absolute lack of activity whatsoever.
