/jp/ - Otaku Culture

2895638 No.2895638 [Reply] [Original]

Would /jp/ anons be considered otaku's or weeaboos? To my understanding, weeaboos love Japan regardless of how shitty 3D Japanese culture is but since most of us hate Japan, would that push us more to the Otaku side?

>> No.2895643

WE'RE JUST NERDS, OK!?

>> No.2895651

We like to distance ourselves from weeaboos, but it's exactly what we are.
We aren't otaku because we aren't japanese.

I don't know.

I don't dedicate my life to Japanese shit, but I enjoy VNs and Touhou and I'll buy merchandise occasionally. Other than that I play regular video games as well and read books.

We're not from the moon, so we're just ordinary nerds.

/jp/ anons are ''otaku'' if we use the term in its westernized meaning.
Just like we use ''anime'' and ''manga'' to mean Japanese cartoons/comics.

>> No.2895685

Weeaboo is a person who wants to be japanese

>> No.2895693

We're not weeaboo. We don't buy pocky shit or want to live in Japan because we think Japan is awesome or anything. Those that want to live in Japan want to because of comiket and there are shops which cater to their tastes.

personally I think of 'weeaboo' as being similar to the idea behind 'wigger'.

Otaku is actually "nerd". In itself it has nothing to do with hot gluing figmas and fucking dakimuras.

Well whether it's relevant or not doesn't change my point.

>I don't follow the logic behind that.

Why would someone spend their type doing something they dislike when there's plenty of other things out there to choose from? I don't see what being a NEET has to do with Touhou and VNs. I'm a NEET, but if I was not interested in anime, VNs, etc. I wouldn't bother with them.

I think I'm pretty unique in this community....

I don't really have a reason to hate Japan because I've never been there, and I only know a few Japanese people through my job, but I will say that I am terrified of Japan for some reason. Every time a Japanese friend from the Tokyo branch of our company asks me to visit, I decline the invitation because the thought of setting foot in Japan scares the fuck out of me. Me too actually, Japan scares the shit out of me. I don't think I would last long there on a casual trip, I'm somehow imagening that I would go nuts and become paranoid.

The way I see it there's much goodies spawning from their popculture, but there is so much wrong with that country as a society.

>> No.2896078

People can talk about Japanese usage all they want but that's really irrelevant. Out in most of the West(America at least), it's used to describe a specific type of nerd.

Now I would generally not go around calling myself an otaku because I think it sounds ridiculously stupid, but as far as it being a term to describe people who invest significant amount of time with what's considered "otaku culture", I don't really care.

And I don't have any reason to hate Japan. I also find Japanese culture(East Asian culture as a whole though) really interesting.

What do you guys have against Japan? It's really not a bad place.

>The way I see it there's much goodies spawning from their popculture, but there is so much wrong with that country as a society.

Because there's nothing wrong with Western society? I bet you're going to call Japan "xenophobic" or something, and be completely oblivious to how ironic that would be coming from you.

>> No.2896195

>>2896097
I can see the irony, thank you. I can also see that you want my reasons for disliking Japan as a society. I'll keep it short: the view on women. In Japan it's still like in the good old fifties - man finds work and woman, makes a family, and the woman remains lucked up in the house. I don't need to say anything more than that, it's no joke that men are more highly regarded than women in Japan. And why do you think the Japanese population is getting awfully old? Well, Japanese women found out that finding a man and making a family beheld less benefits than screwing the whole thing, get a career and live with mom and pops.

There you go.

>> No.2896229

And honestly, don't get me started on e.g. the American way. BUT, I think there's a small change going on. By all means no revolution, but a small step in the right direction. Japan on the other hand have been sticking to their old fashioned ways for ever. I don't think they'll change their ways untill they get burnt, real bad. It'll be exciting to see wether the demographic or the economic crisis gets them first.

Oh, and I forgot to add elitism to my little reasonings. That shouldn't be too hard to swallow. I could get into detail if you wanted though.

>> No.2896232

>>2896195

Everything you learned about Japan is obviously from trolls on /jp/. This is sad.

And either way, I don't see how that has anything to do with being in the country. Even if what you were saying was not a completely exaggeration, it's not like Japan is like some middle eastern country where women will be stoned for having premarital sex. And I assuming you're not a woman so none of this affects you.

How rude, I don't lurk on /jp/; just passing by, really. I can assure you that I've done my research on Japan. I don't know Japan in the way that I've fealt it, I just look at different reliable sources and spot
miscellaneous connection which makes me curious. But by all means, lets not generalize, Japan isn't a small country. We're discussing tendencies right? I'm not saying that my words are hard facts, and you have no reason to regard them as it. Surely I'm just a troll since I speak words that are not of your taste...

Anyway, either you're the cynical person or I'm the melodramatic person. I'm probably the one with issues though; I mean, why the hell should I care if there's certain ethic issues here and there in a foreign country? Japan was a country with huge possibilities, and still is in several ways. I do think though that they never truly let go of their old militarism. I mean, it worked pretty well for them untill someone dropped the bomb on them. Japan is a country were only the strongest prevail, even though it never had to be that way, there's little room for the little guys. That's my issue with Japan.

For me, I define "weeaboos" as non-Japanese people with an interest in the niche Japanese culture like anime, manga, visual novels, figurines, other doujinshi, and the like. By that definition, most /jp/ anon's (and a portion of /a/, maybe even /v/'s userbase) would be weeaboos.

On the other hand, I separate weeaboos from wapanese, which I define as the non-Japanese people who think Japan is the best country, Japanese culture is the best, have an obsession with Japan, want to live in Japan, etc.

That 's just stupid. I never said anything about "one group is better than another" or "I'm part of a group which I consider superior to another group, and do not wish to be associated with the other group". People felt the need to categorize and differentiate between ethnicities--East Asians, MIddle Easterners, Caucasians, Africans, etc. Even if some of these terms have positive/negative connotations attached to them, their denotations do not imply any racial superiority of a particular group.

So then, what is wrong with categorizing people with different kinds of interest in Japan?
