Do you guys have any games you really liked on release, but as time went by you realized they were actually not that good?

I was around for when Hakuouki was first released in English, I got the special box set and everything. I was so hyped about it and as time went on I realized that the boys were really fucking boring and that I'd only been riding the high of a novel experience. I imagine this is how EOPs are currently.

Incredible autism incoming re: Club Suicide, but I wanted to share some thoughts because it’s not like anything else is going on

I liked it way more than I expected I would. I thought it would just be an opportunity to indulge my fucked up tastes and thought the writing quality would suffer taking the themes into account, but I was wrong. I was consistently entertained. The story can be chillingly cruel, but it also has plenty of heartwarming moments. The writing is pleasant, the music is great, though sparse, and the MC is both funny and cute. I wouldn’t hesitate to say that she’s her own person. It really is anti-romance, but in the sense that romantic love is the last thing on the MC’s mind and what she feels for the boys is closer to friendship or familial love than anything else. What the boys feel for her is another story altogether. The subject matter doesn’t lend itself well to romance, anyway. If it was compulsory, I’m sure it would’ve been shitty. Also, the engine it runs on, Tyrano, is a fucking dumpster fire. The read/unread text skip function doesn’t work, music sometimes plays at the wrong time, etc. There is no CG gallery or scene replay.

The order I played the boys was: Masaya -> Mitsuki -> Eba -> Shiki -> Meiyou. I liked every single boy, and every seiyuu did a great job. There is no overarching plot, every route is self-contained, though each one has some kind of tidbit about some of the other boys that you wouldn’t learn on their own. But if I really had to say, Meiyou’s last two endings feel the most like “closure.” The format and brevity of each route was very nice for someone like me who only has small bursts of free time. That’s not to say that the game is short, though, I think it’s longer than the devs estimated it would be. However, there were a few moments when developments felt too abrupt and unconvincing, which were jarring when everything else flowed well. To say a few words: Masaya is kind and cute and never left my mind through the rest of my playthroughs. Mitsuki is moe, and I was surprised by the strength of what MC said in one of his endings. Eba’s issue is something that all artists can identify with. Shiki is special because there is a part of him that is drastically different from any of the others. Meiyou is obsessed with yuri, to put it plainly, and it’s kind of endearing, but also pretty weird. There is some kind of issue with his voice files sounding compressed, which is unfortunate because his seiyuu did such a good job. Not only did he bring out Meiyou’s unusual sensuality, but also his rage. The boys all have major flaws, and you might even have trouble understanding why they want to die so badly, and I found that realistic. Even when they work out their problems, they remain imperfect.

Recommended playing order: Masaya -> Shiki -> Eba -> Mitsuki -> Meiyou (endings in numerical order)
Boy ranking: Masaya > Meiyou > Mitsuki > Eba > Shiki
Shock value ranking: Meiyou >> Masaya = Shiki > Mitsuki >> Eba

TL;DR It’s an unusually hot March. Don't play it if you want romance. Even the good endings are bittersweet, and if Meiyou’s last two endings are played last, that bittersweet feeling is doubled and tinged with a terrible irony. 8.7/10

Actually, I can't think of anything that's just straight up tacky in its edginess like something you'd see on DA in the mid 00s, but yeah, kinshiiku games can get pretty edgy at times (mainly their older games). They're more just uncomfortable in my opinion than edgy, though. As an example, you have some really unpleasant torture scenes with gore in Majo and child slave trafficking in Suregaru.

Hiragana isn't that fucking hard to learn, it shouldn't take you over a week to do it. I can't imagine trying to read without already knowing them. Like that other Anon said, try something lighter first.
Hooking and mouseover dictionaries can speed up reading a lot but can also encourage you to form bad habits and forget new words as soon as you finish the sentence, so I'd use it sparingly when you eventually do decide to start reading VNs or else you'll be reading a lot but retaining essentially nothing, moon knowledge-wise.

This game should basically be called: how scenic vistas, nice backgrounds and pretty people hide a fucked up dystopic caste system where people get constantly executed.

People usually mention Taishou Mebiusline and Shingakkou for games with good story. I haven't played the latter but Mebiusline is pretty good. I think compared to Hashihime it has far less appeal for people who aren't into BL though.

Well I've done 2 routes and the game's a little boring (though romance parts were unexpectedly cute, Hirotsugu is basically a middle-schooler, kek).
It's bizarre how polite MC is to his wannabe rapists, but I guess it's his charm point. Kaoru did nothing wrong.
The spooky supernatural part was going well until Oomori shows up and ruins the mood with DUDE MAGIC SWORD LMAO. I was expecting him to die horribly to show how spooky the demon is, but his ossan moe powers saved him.
I suppose Mimasaka's route is the infodump one where everything gets explained in detail but I don't want to read it, they'll inevitably give him some boohoo it's not my fault I'm a psychopath backstory, won't they.

You should do Tachibana's route at least, it's the best by far. (though IIRC one of his endings is locked until you've finished the other guys? a shame. But either routes were pretty good.) Also you'll get to see Mimasaka being pathetic and Kazuki not being a complete useless wimp for a change.
But yeah, plot-wise Mizusawa and Yukinomiya are probably the shallowest routes, though they're nice and romantic. (I liked all the exposition about the lives of japanese aristocratic scions in Yukinomiya's too, honestly more interesting than the stupid plot.)

Tachibana's route was so much fun. Also it felt like the only one where they really commited to the slasher movie thing and actually had major characters killed off.
Everyone was out of character compared to the rest of the game but I liked that route's versions more anyway so I didn't care. Especially pathetic alcoholic Mimasaka.
