To be honest, I'd rather pay Witch Hunt for translating it. If it wasn't for them I couldn't play it. Umineko on its own is worthless if you can't speak Jap. Would you pay $30 for an unfinished book you can't even read and can't take around with you, having to read it at your PC?

Your logic is that by playing it but not paying, I'm damaging his financial situation in some way. In fact, he can still sell as many copies as he would have anyway, whether I play it or not. If I was literally stealing a copy - physically taking it - then you'd be right; that's money lost. He is not losing money by me doing this, any more than he's losing money by all the billions of people that won't buy OR play the game.

If I pirate it but don't play it, what then? I haven't taken anything from him and the "if you want to play it, pay for it" argument doesn't work because I wouldn't have played it. However, If I literally stole it, physically, and then didn't play it at all, he'd still be losing money.
