I believe that the main reason is that every otaku who takes pictures and posts them like that probably has the means to put things in those pictures. They represent a very small fraction of the overall otaku population, and probably got the money though either inheritance, internet, or possibly even a functioning job. Otaku != hikki.

I mean, it's easy to spend about £50 or more on a night out and me and my friends have spent £100s over a weekend (on rare occasions). It would only take a few weeks of not doing that do afford some huge HDTV.
