Dont learn kanji -- learn words. Sooner or later, you'll just automatically know the readings. I know that 勉 and 強 are "ben" and "kyou" because I learned "benkyou"
Same goes for a lot of other words.
今日　- what is it, kyou, konnichi, ima hi, ima nichi?
You'd never know unless you learned it as a word, and then learned other words with the same kanji in it.

Basically -- learn words, and you'll learn the kanji.

You just learn it. Like how the "know" root sounds completely different from when in "knowledge".

all these people are right. You learn vocab, not so much kanji.
Say you're using Genki, OK? They have the Kanji portion in the back where they teach you kanji. Guess what, a LOT of the vocab is for words you ALREADY KNOW! *gasp*

So, what you could potentially do, is learn all the kanji for all the vocab in the VOCAB section as well. Learn it just like you would learn the kanji in the back of the book. You will automatically pick up on the other readings of the kanji rather than learning 2000+ kanji and kajillion+ readings.

It's...a lot more effortless than that, and it is actually a lot more useful being able to read words. For instance, I was playing a VN the other day, and it meant to say "3 months since that fateful meeting" but it translated as "that Electric Horseman of Fate etc..."
The kanji could have been "electric" and "horseman" and then you have to infer that that's "meeting"? No! But, the people who KNOW the kanji recognize it.
I dont know what the actual kanji was...i was using AGTH/Atlas, so I can't verify anything.
That's like when you're in 1st grade, learning that

P is for Possum
L is for Leg
