In Fate, the balance of power is squarely in Shirou's corner, and Shirou is obviously too square and too naive to even think of abusing it. The result: pure love. Even the possibility of one of them using the other doesn't exist.

In UBW, Shirou is at Rin's mercy, both physically and psychologically, for almost the entire route. Rin visibly delights in making Shirou dance to her tune, reducing him to a stammering idiot with the slightest gesture. Do not try to deny this, she does it in almost every scene she's in. How much of her actions is just worry that she'll lose her new boytoy before she's done with it? We don't know. If you have faith in Rin, as much as the naive Shirou has, this could be another pure love path, but if you're not willing to give her the benefit of the doubt, it's a rather depressing route, with the naive idealist protagonist being reduced to the cabana boy of the domineering female lead.

She's the grounded, rational mind to his idealistic, self-absorbed goals. He wants to "save everyone he can within his world (his view)," so she's the one that has to direct and instruct him on the limits of what he can and can't do.

Seeing as it's Shirou, treating him like a naive, but lovable, pet is probably the best starting point.

That's true. It's easily the most likable thing I remember her doing, and I was a little bit shocked actually because it seemed to be almost out of character for the cold-hearted bitch I had already gotten used to thinking of her as.

When I was reading F/SN it seemed like every single time the "target" of the route did _anything_, Shirou would lose his cool and start a five line mental monologue about how looking aside with downcast eyes is a low blow/makes his head explode/some other ridiculous hyperbole that made him sound like an unusually verbose 12 year old with his first schoolyard crush.

Yes, most of this is just Shirou being Shirou. But Rin knows that he is ridiculously oversensitive like that and she loves it. Every moment he loses his cool, the trademark evil smile comes like clockwork. In one or two cases she says outright that she loves fucking around with Shirou because of his reactions.
