I never understood why Kanako got labeled with the "overprotective and motherly" traits like Ran is usually associated with.

To me, Kanako seems like a venerable personage - even moreso due to being a goddess. I'd always thought her to take things very seriously, as opposed to Suwako, who just sort of goes with the flow. Kanako seems like she sticks strongly to traditional values (I mean, shit, she came to Genskoyo to gather faith since the outside world was getting to technological and faith-less), while Suwako is much more flexible in that aspect. Admittedly, using in-game dialogue to determine how a Touhou would act isn't very reliable at all considering how bad-ass Kaguya sounded, but turned out to be comparatively laid-back (among other such transformations from in-game to ZUN's written works), but with Kanako, goddamn.

"A god must eliminate all who oppose
their struggle for faith, one by one.

"What Gensokyo lacks ...
Is belief in god. "

"Shrines don't exist for the benefit of their shrine maidens.

A shrine exists to be the home of the gods.
I believe now is ...

Now is the time for you to seriously reconsider the meaning of a shrine!"

"Those without any faith of their own can never
understand the meaning of faith. "

"If a shrine loses its faith, it becomes nothing but a simple shack.

Now, you, who only goes to visit such a shack every day--

Experience this once -- the raging soul of a god!"

What a hard-ass, seriously. Hell, in UFO, she tells Sanae to go out to HUNT YOUKAI, not to mention the war she had with Suwako.

Seeing how the in-game stuff is the only thing we've got on Kanako at the moment, I really can't see how they picked up Kanako-mom from it, and I feel it's a serious pity it came out this way. If I had the art skills necessary, I'd make a doujinshi with this godly Kanako.

By now you should know well enough to know that the Fanon rarely, if ever, follows the Canon.

Like your example of Kaguya in-game and in fan works - in Imperishable Night she's a terrifying, forceful person, with all the command of royalty.

In addition, Bohemian Archive has Kaguya hosting a Lunar Expo, and is relatively soft-hearted. There's really not much of a need to get too aggravated about it or anything since (at least to me) one of the good things about Touhou is the relative amount of free speculation people can make about the world of Gensokyo, whether it's reasonably serious, or if it's just lighthearted comedy.

Honestly, I was pretty sad when I found out that Kaguya and Mokou enjoyed each other's company because fighting each other gave them something to do for fun.

I like it in my head where Mokou's hate for Kaguya is still unquenchable after so long, and Kaguya just takes it in stride. I'm also not too much of a fan of the Kaguya in CiLR. As a matter of fact, someone mentioned this a while ago, and I've pretty much stuck to it too since I liked it a whole lot; It would have been nice if Kaguya wasn't too laid-back, and she kept most of Eientei under and eneternal state. Makign it visible in Gensokyo isn't a problem, but now it seems like Kaguya doesn't really have anything with her ability, even though she's actually used it for story purposes in making the Hourai Elixir.

Can you imagine how badass it would be for all of Einetei to be on fire while Mokou and Kaguya are fighting in there, but having nothing inside actually being burned down?

That suggested to me more that Kaguya would enjoy torturing Mokou to death over and over just to listen to her scream, and throw all caution to the winds as her hapless victim would simply rise up from the dead again and again.

Mokou just wants to die, but the elixir won't let her. So for her it is cathartic as well. They fight because Kaguya needs something to kill, and Mokou needs someone to kill her. They accompany each other nicely in that way.

Knowing this, I wasn't too bothered by what you mentioned.

Well, we know that everything is not dying all the time and humans aren't falling before the Youkai like wheat before a scythe.

However, people die and there are fatalities. The major Youkai are not benevolent, the gods are petty and malicious, and the fairies are less playful, more impish and prone to trapping stupid humans.

That is Serious Gensokyo, or the Gensokyo from PC98 that I fondly recall from the olden days.

GRIMSOKYO is where all the above things mentioned in the first passage are true, along with such niceties as Kyuubi-Ran mauling people and splitting them open from throat to bunghole, or Yukari bathing weekly in virgin blood to regain her youth..or rubbing the sperm of dead human boys into her skin to smooth out the wrinkles, etc.

MOE-MOE GENSOKYO is the nonsensical Walfas and Iosys buggery about little girls having tea in the forest and wearing silly hats, while exchanging chaste kisses and blushing furiously at the very suggestion of carnal affairs. GRIMSOKYO is very, very fun. It reminds me of a mix between an Anita Blake novel and the Song of Ice And Fire cycle - gritty, pseudorealistic historical fiction set in Feudal Japan. There's a dark, scary forest full of things that want to eat you, you run the risk of dying in very painful and humiliating ways, there's kinky sex, bloodshed, and such...for all its GRIM DARKNESS, it's a very colourful Gensokyo.

My main complaint with fansokyo is how very dull it is. Literally nothing interesting happens. Maikaze was some boring shit specifically because of that.

I can understand how people would prefer the Reimu who just groans 'Ara ara' and cleans up spilled tea when someone drops their teacup, instead of her leaping over the table, grabbing the offensive person by the collar, and screaming into their faces "IT'S ON NOW BITCH".

Shit does NOT have to GET REAL at every instance. But it's fun when that happens.

There are some people who froth at the mouth at the mention of IOSYS, and immediately start screaming "GTFO WITH YOUR FAGGOTSHIT WEBCOMICS" if you mention Walfas. I am not one of them, but there it is.

If you don't find consciousness a burden, then you're id driven and effectively a child, and it is perhaps improper to speak of you as fully conscious.

If you do find consciousness burden, imagine that magnified without end, perpetuating and perpetual.

Immortality is a horror, pure and simple. The only way Christian theology subverts this is to imagine immortality as a contact and subvention into a pure being (read Paradiso by Dante).

SLUTSOKYO -

The Gensokyo full of cockteasing, nubile Lolis who crave thick, spermfilled dicks, and Mistress-like, busty, curvy older women with rampant sexual appetites.

Characterized by Ran fucking Chen, Yukari fucking everything, dickgirls and sluts everywhere, Yuuka giving footjobs and titfucks, and other fun things of the sort. Tewi Ass can be found here. Cirno sucks your dick in this Gensokyo. Keine will fuck your butthole roughly in this Gensokyo. You get the point.

I.E. the Gensokyo of hentai doujinshi. Yes, I just called your japanese porno comic books 'hentai doujinshi', eat a dick.

This Gensokyo is wildly non-canon and features pairings illogical to the canon works, but one day a Touhou VN will come along and turn Slutsokyo into canon.
