I think characters in anime aren't clearly either white or Japanese. They're just too stylised to be able to say which they most resemble. Very often characters that are not from Japan look identical to ones from Japan, so it's a moot point.

Do you really believe this? Just so you know, it has no basis in fact. It's had constant contact with the mainland through its entire history from the Yayoi period onward and with regards to the west, it maintained close relations with the Dutch from the 17th century onwards.
