To the anon asking in the last thread:
After finishing this one, I'd agree with the other anon: despite some of the scenes being somewhat creepy, this game isn't really horror. Don't play this if you're looking for something spooky this Halloween. It has no jumpscares or guro, isn't too long, and is mildly interesting, so it probably wouldn't hurt to try it. I spent the whole game waiting for the horror part to kick in and, when it did, it was very underwhelming.

The main couple is cute and it would have been nice if the game was drawn out a little bit more before the horror kicked in.

The game was actually pretty ok, except for the true end, which I thought was completely half assed nothing like literally retconning the whole game so he's a good dindu and can geta
happy end. I would have liked to see an actual route based on the game events that led to something that isn't a bad end.
That said, my favourite route in it was Shiba, best boy, gave me strong Iseya from yoshiwara vibes, but less dark, so more fitting for the MC.
I love this kind of guys that just work his hardest for the girl. Especially in his case because when you look back no his actions, he's just trying to show off like a kid with a new toy, pretty cute.

I gotta say, this made me feel fucking terrible, emotionally. Being asked to help because he was too scared made it even worse, but I can't decide if it was more painful than the one where you had to hear him muffle his screams or not. I would've liked to think I have thick skin, but I guess not. Even though this was an obvious conclusion to an ending in a game called "Club Suicide" I was still charmed by Pink's near-autistic innocence to the point that I was pretty worried about him at the end, especially when I ran through his route the first time completely blind. Also, he has these big cute eyelashes, like a baby cow. I highly doubt I'll care as much for the other ones in this way, but I'll only find out as I get further. The devs listed this route as 刺激少 and this was painful enough so I'm curious to see what the other routes are like.

Regarding the "anti-romance" thing, it's just as it said on the tin, there's no romance in his route. The MC explicitly expresses feelings of something like friendship, and doesn't even really think of Masaya as a member of the opposite sex. I like the writing, though.

What did you think of Harukanaru Toki no Naka de?

I watched Harukanaru Toki no Naka de. Specifically, the Hachiyou Shou series, associated OVAs and specials (including prequels and sequels), and the Maihitoyo movie. These various anime are related to otome visual novels which have the same title. These media may also be known by the titles Haruka: Beyond the Stream of Time, or In a Distant Time. Here are my thoughts on the anime content:

Harukanaru is a reverse harem but don't judge it based solely on this fact. It is a reverse harem but without cheap trashy fanservice. It actually has lots of nice romantic scenes. The show has artistic merit.

Large cast, most of whom are well developed and decently characterized. Unlike so many others, this anime takes advantage of its length by developing its characters. Character development augments romance so well, so in this case it is of particular importance. Similarly, despite the large cast, within the harem there is a diverse variety of personalities; each character is distinctly unique from the others. Takamichi, Yasuaki, and Eisen are my favourite characters. The female MC is a comparatively bland character relative to the male cast, which is regrettable but not surprising since this is a reverse harem series.

Romance, lust, love, envy, teamwork, prejudice, duty and various other themes are explored in an emotionally engaging manner.

Really nice soundtrack which uses traditional Japanese instruments extensively. Although the number of songs in the OST is relatively low, especially when the length of the anime (26 episodes) is taken into account. Consequently, some tracks are repeated quite frequently. The quality of the music is high but I simply wish they produced more of it. Regardless, the OST was enjoyable enough to be placed on my portable music device. The voice acting is decent as well.

Nice traditional japanese outfits. Character designs in general are attractive despite the production year. The animation is serviceable. The character animations are generally crude but they did an okay job at animating facial expressions, which to me is far more important than any action scene (Note: this aired around early 2000s).

The historical setting felt genuine and immersive. After the credits they even have these cute short "guide to traditional japan" segments. Sometimes there are old Japanese poems displayed at the end of episodes as well. Supposedly the story takes place in and around the coetaneous capital city during the Heian period of Japanese history (and the sequels take place progressively further in time).

The pacing is slow but I was fine with it because it allowed for richer characters and setting. That said, much of the actual plot I found kind of dull. Specifically, the demons-versus-guardians plot device felt repetitive and boring after a while. This is my most significant issue with the anime. The show was at its best when it focused on character development and character interaction, instead of the boring unengaging plot.

In terms of direction, again this was most flawed in regard to the plot. Specifically, I was sometimes confused by what was happening and why the characters were doing what they were doing.

My overall rating: 7/10

I think it's worth mentioning that I was forced to suffer the indignity of streaming this because the one torrent I managed to download only had french subs (unbeknownst to me beforehand). Anyway, my point is that this anime has a high probability of being lost in the sands of time (pun intended - see anime title harhar), and for this reason you might want to watch it soon if it sounds appealing.

I'd also like to make some comments that are specific to the 2006 "Maihitoyo" movie:
- the tone/atmosphere was notably darker than the original TV series.
- comparatively better animation, unsurprisingly. Furthermore, a lot more care was put into lighting, cinematography, and artistic detail. Overall visuals were definitely much stronger than the TV show.
- entirely fresh soundtrack which was just as great as the original TV series.
- I liked the demon love interest more in this than in the TV series.
- the focus was mainly on the female MC and her character arc during this movie. However, this comes at the cost of not using the usual male characters for anything more than trivial plot advancement. Which is unfortunate because this series is good at using the males for character-driven story arcs. That said, I actually thought the movie's story was excellent, even though the usual male characters of the TV series weren't used in any meaningful way. In fact I might even rewatch this movie because of how much I liked the story (or perhaps read the VN it's based upon if I can find it).

The sequel OVAs are all kind of bad and my enjoyment of them was at best lukewarm (although the music is quite good). These OVAs were probably meant to be paired with the visual novels, as opposed to the TV anime and Maihitoyo movie, both of which can be enjoyed by a viewer otherwise unacquainted with the franchise. I dropped the second of the animated sequels (Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 3), mainly because all of the characters and backstory had presumably been explained in other franchise media, making the viewing experience incomprehensible from my anime-only perspective.

Finally, here's a list of the animated franchise content with my corresponding numerical ratings.
Ajisai Yumegatari: 5/10
Hachiyou Shou: 7/10
Maihitoyo: 7/10

I've played the game. It hasn't aged the best and is pretty 90s shoujo corny with the demon-of-the-week stuff but it was back when otome could still afford to have multiple branching paths within branching paths so it's still fun in that regard. Haven't watched the anime but the manga isn't bad. It embellishes on the source game but it works out. Only thing is that the character interactions were better that whatever they were doing with the story.

OK the plot won't be perfect but, a good protagonist, love interests, depressing art and bgm, can make it goty.

Most recent game nitro released was minikui mojika no ko. OK its a bad nuking, but damn the bgm was perfect. And some animated scenes +cg too were deep. Bgm is very important.

Actually, yurifag has a huge plot twist.

He doesn't want to become a girl so he can enjoy the yuriworld. It's that he doesn't want to become like his father. His father is an alcoholic and verbally abuses his wife and daughter and yurifag feels helpless. Like he can't help them. And that if he was a girl it would be better. He associates his father with being male, and associates being male with being an abuser. It sounds stupid, and it is, but people very often make these associations when they are young and it sticks with them for the rest of their lives unless they actively try to change it.

I just finished yurifags route.

I liked his route, but to be honest I expected more let's say? I love the dialogues they are well written, I would love to see an English version of this game to grasp 100 % of it, like references, cultural things, etc.
It wasn't a romantic route and I can't say that I'm clear about yurifags sexuality.
But the reason he dies is definitely not because he wasn't born a woman.

I liked his suicide endings. They were more dark than sad. In 17 end he commits suicide in front of his father, to make him feel guilty for as long as he lives. 18 end was quite darker.

I personally loved 19 end which I am not 100% sure what happened to him and what he is doing. Nobody is.

Ending 20 was a happy one. It wasn't bad but let's say I expected more? It is an antiromance game so what to expect. I'm happy he finally saw the ''light''. And with his speech he can prevent the others to die too I guess?

So those who have finished his route, what do you think of ending 19? What is he doing now?

I didn't particularly care for or get emotionally attached to any of the characters so the ending didn't hit me very hard, but that might just because I'm emotionally dead inside and already thinking about what to play next by the time I'm on the last route in a vn.
Munesada was probably the only character I liked (though that was probably mainly because same seiyuu as matsuda). It was nice that the story didn't seem to drag on at any point that I noticed unlike galtia (different authors I know), though. 7/10 it was ok

The seiyuu of Shiki in club suicide did a live on his youtube channel, playing club suicide together with Eba's seiyuu and they voiced the whole route. They did Shiki's route happy ending. They cried a lot as well.

It was really good and sentimental, did an awesome job.

On the topic of sexuality, I think we can at least say with certainty that he likes girls. If you meant it in the sense of whether you think he wants to BE the little girl or not, then that's an entirely different story. I personally think we were intentionally taken for a ride with the Saturday(? I think) events, with the rug pulled out from under us when we learned what yurifag's actual deal regarding suicide was. We learned that it was more of an issue with him not wanting to become like his father specifically, not that he was unhappy with being male, etc. however, allow me to don my tinfoil hat and say that I think the author left it open ended in regards to what yurifag feels about being or embodying yuri. I think there's a difference between choosing to emulate something on a given day (namely the purity that he feels he lacks) and naturally appearing a certain way to the extent that someone you barely know can pick up on it from an objective or aesthetic standpoint. Also, in another route, you run into him in a cafe or something and he says something like "貴女は貴女、彼は彼、わたしはわたし" which is an exceedingly strange thing to say. It was minor and the moment lasted for all of about ten lines, but I thought it was unusual. Then again, at the end, him saying he wanted to be a yuri JK was implied to have been played for jokes, you could see his usage of わたしand 貴女 as part of his emulation, and you could read his wanting to be reborn as "yuri" meaning he wants to be a pure, beautiful, literal flower as a continuation of his anger towards his father. Does he actually want to be the little girl? Is he just a metrosexual that gets way too lost in his delusions? I don't know. I'm not saying it's one way or the other, but frankly, even after I felt like I was rused by the reveal, something still felt a bit off. At the absolute least, he has no qualms about being seen as feminine.

I liked his route a lot it was a twist as they let us believe that he just hated himself bc he was born a boy and not a girl.
Maybe celtia tried a deeper meaning like a trauma can cause someone to hate their own self and wish they were born something different. I remember playing an otome where MC didn't particularly hate her gender, but she was a rape victim and wished she was born a man instead bc she thought if she was a man she wouldn't have to suffer abuse at home. I am looking forward to play the other routes as well and for their future works. And I pray they stop using tyrano and hire a decent programmer the game has many problems. It's a shame because the games is very good.
