I think it's nostalgia for the most part.

See, in the early nineties, my Dad, who almost always slept on the couch in the living room (I thought nothing of it at the time), would occasionally let me stay up late and watch TV with him. Usually we'd watch action/horror flicks a la Terminator, Aliens, Predator, or First Blood.

But sometimes, dubbed late-night anime would air. The stuff that was "too much for kids" usually due to explicit violence and the cast saying a lot of grown up words like "damn" and "shit."

This was mostly from 92 to 95, when I was about 5 to 8.

So when I got Xenogears, it was a godsend. It was, crammed onto a two-disc game, those nights when I got to stay up and watch action, sci-fi, and horror. Xenogears progresses a lot like an older anime series. It really should have had an adaptation. It's screaming for one.

So it instills in the otaku that euphoria we all know as the nostalgia bomb. It's hard to describe, and nobody likes having their childhood torn down, so it's easier to write off the other guy as a dumb faggot.

I love Xenogears but I didn't always like Fei. He occasionally said something sensible, but the first impressions were weak. I suppose that's the point of character development, but, well, I still hate Fei The Pacifist.

The story deals heavily with eastern religious themes. Of course there's an obligatory western catholicism based organization, but the plot of Xenogears as Fei and Elly are concerned involves them meeting and falling in love several times throughout the ages. In every reincarnation, Elly makes a noble sacrifice of herself and dies either in Fei's arms or just out of his reach.

Fei breaks the cycle in the events of Xenogears and finally saves Elly from having to be a martyr for the umpteen millionth time.

So, yes and no. Elly dies. Elly dies a lot. But only in previous lives. Elly manages to survive the last one.

To make things freakier, one of Fei's previous incarnations is actually a character in the story who frequently attacks Fei and the group, but never lays a hand on Elly.

I forgot what happens to him by the end of the game, but it's pretty fucking weird when the game reveals that you're playing a character who is the reincarnation of one of the biggest asshole villains who's been hounding you since the beginning of the game.

Also, there's a female villain in the game who is able to possess any woman she wants, because she was the first woman on the planet or some shit and so she's basically every woman and can be whichever one she wants to be whenever she feels like it.

What Xenogears deserves is disc 2.

That's the only reason it was forgettable. Halfway through the story they had to rush things and wash too much shit over the player too quickly. It was easy to lose track of what happened and everything between the birth of Weltall 2 and the ending is a bit of a blur for everyone who played Xenogears.

I'm just happy it was able to recruit some more fans to the franchise. Many people are scared away from watching an anime once they discover it has mechas in it. But SEED did a good job of letting people know that Gundam is not, was not, and never will be a story about mechs. The only reason why Gundam 0079 managed to stand out from the herd of 80s mecha is because it wasn't only about the mechs. Sadly, all of Gundam SEED's progress with newcomers was wasted when Gundam 00 aired. Gundam 00 basically starts out with hurr durr my hax mech is stronger than yours. If your Gundam has over 40 episodes and it's the only Gundam that's currently airing at its time, then it better honor the Gundam name/legacy. Otherwise you'll end up with fans such as myself that have the tendency of calling them out on their bastardization of our beloved series.
