Fate/Stay Night held my interest with the dynamic battles between Servants.

Because it only causes physical pain. I'm talking like, a curse that when someone chops off your hand, it returns it three-fold and makes their lower arm explode into a shower of blood.

So, someone pierces you in the shoulder with an arrow, and their shoulder erupts in a massive spray of gore as a huge hole sprouts from nowhere.

Being purely defensive, it'd be hard to make proper use without getting mangled, but it'd still be a good countermeasure, since whoever comes up to chop at you is going to feel it in return. And like, the curse forces the (painful) healing of non-mortal wounds, so you spend the whole time using your limbs to try and keep things from hitting you in the sweet spots.

It's like some sado-masochist's wet dream power.

George's barrier didn't "reverse" any attack.
It had absolutely no merit defensively. Any attack that lands on him would still have the same value.
It's a counter-attack, not a defense. The landed attack's power is then doubled and returned.
Which is why Jessica's haymaker flipped his organs out and conversely George's normal human shoe exploded her head.

FSN takes an insanely long time to read. I've got something like 24 hours on the clock and I'm only around the midway point of the first route.

I wish there were two options: one that shows an entire text screen instantly instead of me having to mash enter/nudge scrollwheel/hammer mouse button separately for each LINE of text (that would double the reading speed, easy), and another option that skipped all the repetitive cooking/eating scenes so that they don't take up time from actually interesting things.

Artificially prolonged reading times are a common problem in VN's. The main reason I've only finished one route in Katawa Shoujo's demo is that I haven't been able to justify the hours and hours it would take to go through another one, even though there isn't all that much actual text in it.
