I'ts not poor because it's the first episode. I can't judge it as such; I won't know that till the rest come out. I love ch1 of Higurashi and ep1 of Umineko. I loved them before I even read the others, so it's not a case of "looking back on it, I like them a lot more." Those work great even isolated from the rest. I liked how everything was handled and I've even reread them the most. Phase 1 is just extremely poor in comparison, but you shouldn't be comparing titles against each other anyways, they're all different beasts, and Ciconia so far, for me, doesn't stand on its own. Only reason I didn't drop it and will read the rest of the phases is because it's r07 and WTC, which is why I'm hoping it pulls itself up.
Don't let what I've said stop you from reading it if you haven't though, it seems to be divisive where half the people really like it, you may fall into that camp.

What are you looking for in a WTC? A mystery with a slight horror/paranoid atmosphere? RGD is the entire opposite of that. If you like Higanbana, you'll love it. It's very similar. As for his other stories, it has plenty of scenes that draw from Higu and Umi but never does anything as good as either. Still, there's worth in seeing Ryukishi do a bit of higu and a bit of umi in the same game.

Overall, it's weaker than his other works but if you liked his other works you're still very likely to like Iwaihime.

I was rereading Watanagashi because of the new anime and I have to say my opinion of it really elevated from before. I used to think the twins twist was really stupid, but in the VN it feels like Ryukishi always scatters some sort of hint that you can deduce whether or not it’s Shion or Mion. Oh. Tsumidamashi with Satoko perspective? Sounds interesting -and likely, since Onidamashi also gave the K1-Satoko relationship some focus. Satoko killing her also sounds better and surprising than a half-assed job of the Yamainu.
Teppei and Rina both return, Satoko sees Teppei and that triggers her HS a little. However, Rena kills both midway through the arc. In need of medicine, Satoko goes to the clinic but find it closed: this is caused by either Rena or Rika dealing with Tomitake and Takano. This ultimately would lead to Satoko getting to L5 level somehow and killing Rika and herself.

I like this theory, but there's a few issues with it.
Assuming similar beats to Tsumihoroboshi, Teppei's main interaction is with the Ryuuguu family the same night Rina is killed, so it's hard to say how Satoko will see him.
It appears that both Rika and Satoko were killed with the same knife, so death by L5 scratching seems unlikely. It's also unclear what Satoko hallucinates that will lead to Rika's murder by knife.
Yamainu probably isn't it, and given the kakera scene, Rika suicide seems much less likely. For one, her optimism is back, she's not just going to keep rolling the dice for better worlds any more.

Yeah, the best part of Matsuribayashi is the build-up to June 1983. The problem with Higurashi Good End arcs is the sheer amount of bullshittery they have to pull off to plausibly defeat the Yamainu.
The other difficulty with Matsuribayashi is, if I remember correctly, that Teppei and Rina are presumably still in the game, which can come back to dick the cast in 1984 and onwards. There's not much benefit to breaking Rule Y if Rule X can flare up again later.

The manga version is probably closer to Ryuukishis script than the anime. In this (https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/so37711443)), from 44:20 to 46:10, Ryuukishi says that in his original script it happened only after Onidamashi was finished. Then anime staff convinced him it would be better to move Hanyuu forward to increase interest in the series and show the fans that it wasn't a remake. Episode 2 is when the name changed, and both Twitter account and webpage updated as well. Obviously, putting it in episode 2 means we can't get Rikas thoughts on the end of Onidamashi, which leads to the shortened version. The manga scene can probably be considered the "original".

Ryuukishi wanted to keep the name reveal of Onidamashi until the very end of episode 4, as he says in the same part I specified above. Would have been pretty damn cool if we got the full Rika scene.

It gets criticized because they don't deal with several problems introduced in the story: Satoko's uncle and her growth in general, Ryuugu's family problems, Houjou's discrimination in the village gets hand waved by Oryou asking "how are Rika-chama and Satoko-chan doing, I heard they're sick"
Shion's suspicion's of the Sonozakis being involved in Satoshi's disappearance or that Mion knows something doesn't come into play.
That's why Miotsukushi-hen, the alternate story where Rika wins is the better story, they deal with all of that.

Rika convinces K1 that everyone was hiding stuff from him just because they don't want to make him scared of the village, which prevents him from going suspicious, Rika and K1 convince the Sonozakis to not kill Rina because that will make Teppei come back and torment Satoko. Rika helps Rena with her family situation and her father being a depressed mess, and when she finds out about Rina trying to scam her dad, they convince her to not kill her. She ends up dying in another way anyway and Teppei comes back, so Rika tells Satoko to stand up for herself, because that's what Satoshi wanted, and she does, like in Minagoroshi.
They help Mion prove to Shion that the Sonozakis are not involved in the curses, they convince her to not kill Teppei too.
Mion announces K1 as her successor or something and everyone in the village misunderstand and think they're engaged, the village nor listens to K1 when he says the bullshit with the Houjos needs to stop.
Honestly this whole arc is a much meaningful conclusion that Matsuri.

As I recall, Rika getting injured by Teppei when saving Satoko was what did it.

My biggest gripe with Miotsukushi-hen is that the character arcs are dealt with so summarily. R07 takes a lot of time and care to narrate and contextualize the struggles of each character in the Answer arcs, and they are handwaved away in half a day throughout Miotsukushi-hen. Minagoroshi-hen does something similar, but seeing the struggles just disappear in half a day through protagonist intervention (as opposed to the characters working on it themselves and struggling through it) diminishes the story for me.
