Alrigh, /jp/.
Maybe I'm a little biased myself, but I just had this doubt floating around into my mind recently and I was looking to clear it up once and for all.

Hands up those who were introduced to shmups only thanks to Touhou.

As for me, my hands are firmly stuck in my pockets.

Danmaku? Yes.
Shoot 'em ups? Hell no.
Galaga, bitches.

I grew up playing various shootem ups, but never liked the genre that much. Thought it was ok I guess.

It seems like regular shooters evolved into what we have today, danmaku.

I'm old enough to have played Space Invaders when it first hit arcades, but I liked Gyruss way more.

I started with The Guardian Legend.

Strikers 1945.
Didn't play Shooters too much but I loved shooting all types of shit out of the sky, dodging bullets, and of course using special bombs.

Oh how many quarter I spent playing the Raiden Project series in the arcades. And oh how many study halls I spent playing Phoenix and Galaga on my TI-86. Ah, the days of my youth, like the smell of fresh lemon.
